These days, Mercury doesn’t get the respect it used to. As the go-between brand for Ford and Lincoln, it used to represent a unique niche of performance luxury cars. The Cougar and the Comet especially were unique marks of performance cars that offered upscale interiors. Seeing one of these upgraded with a modern engine and suspension is always a nice change of pace from Mustangs and Camaros.
Josh and Kathy Martin’s 1965 Comet by Woodyz Hot Rods, found over at Pro-Touring, is one such fine example.
This ’65 got a full frame-off cleansing to make sure the car was up to snuff for the modern power train. That power train is a supercharged 5.4 liter DOHC out of a 2007 GT500 which makes over 500 horsepower at the crank (about 450-ish to the wheels).
There were issues with the width and height of the engine, but nothing insurmountable. Backing the engine is a T-56 six-speed transmission, found on the GT-500 and Dodge Viper among others.
The GT500 engine is more than enough power for the straight lines, though navigating this old beast through a cone course would be difficult using 40-year old suspension bits. A Max G chassis strengthens the core of the car and Wilwood brakes providing stopping power.
A BeCool radiator keeps temperatures down, along with a functional two-scoop fiberglass hood. It is a very cool, toned-down but modern take on a different kind of classic, and the build thread over at Pro-Touring is very detailed, so make sure you take a look.
