Engine building can be one of the toughest and most challenging steps in building your performance ride, and having the right tools can make that task a lot easier. Powerhouse Products has a list of 20 "Must have tools when building an engine" and we have to admit, we didn't have all 20.

For the last 10 or so years, we've been using the so-called "Hammer" approach to engine building.. you know, that's when a Hammer seems to solve every known mechanical or fitment problem. But the guys at Powerhouse seem to think that the hammer doesn't make the Top 20, and whether your an experienced professional or a first timer -- these tools are must haves.

We picked out a few of our favorites below, but you can see the whole list here.
1. Valve Spring Compressor

We have a simple, crappy, valve spring compressor at our shop. We need one of these bad boys. By the looks of it, this heavy duty Valve Spring Compressor can compress the biggest valves springs on the market, and can do it with ease. The compressor is constructed of welded steel and is made to be extremely durable. To fit any size valve spring, the compressor can be adjusted by sliding the arm up and down. These means you can use this same tool no matter what engine you are building.

2. Camshaft Degree Kit

Degreeing the camshaft is one of the most crucial steps in building an engine, and we're almost ashamed to admit we don't have one. Powerhouse offers two different camshaft degreeing kits. Included in both kits is everything you need to degree a camshaft including a degree wheel, pointer, top dead center stops just to name a few.

3. Checking Springs
Another item missing from our shop. Badly.
Powerhouse Products has a set of super light weight checking springs for use when you want to measure piston-to-valve clearance, rocker arm ratio, do your cam degreeing and other measurements. The springs are installed by hand in place of the valve springs.

That means you don't need to be ARNOLD - the governator - to install them. We kind of wish we were Arnold, but that's for another article.

If you want to check out the rest of the 17 must have tools, go here, and do it quickly. Your engine will thank you.
