The Great Recession has left every automaker worldwide in a bad way. While some networks and documentaries have painted the Big Three in particular as bad businesses and bad guys, the fact is that these companies donate millions to charities and non-profit organizations. So when the automakers suffer, so do organizations that have come to rely on their generous donations.
Wards Auto reports that the Automotive Hall of Fame is currently struggling to survive due to a drop in donations.
Founded in 1939 and first located in New York City, the Automotive Hall of Fame has inducted over 240 members into its storied annals. Now located in Detroit, Michigan, adjacent to the Henry Ford Museum, the Hall of Fame is having a hard time surviving in this tough economic climate. Donations from the automakers have fallen off, and that is where the museum gets most of its operating costs. It employs just three people, with a staff of five additional volunteers.

Several staff and positions have already been slashed, but there is only so much that can go before the museum becomes inoperable. Attendance is down 25% this year, from 20,000 last year to about 15,000 this year, and there are plans to introduce family membership groups and rent out the hall.

In reality, though, how many people want to have a birthday at the Hall of Fame? Sure it is a cool place to visit, and many of the honorees (such as Walter P. Chrysler) have been incredibly important to the automotive industry. This month will see five new inductees entered into the hall, including Craig Breedlove, a land-speed record holder, and famed racer and entrepreneur Mickey Thompson.

Hopefully the Automotive Hall of Fame survives the Great Recession, as it enshrines people whose work have had a measurable impact on the way the rest of us live. Not at all like the Basketball Hall of Fame (yuck).
