Ford’s Special Vehicles Team, or SVT for short, has produced some of the most epic, affordable cars in recent history. A successor to the SVO team of the '80s, SVT is mostly known for the Cobra of the 1990s and early 2000s. However, they made plenty of other cars (athough in fewer numbers), among them the track-ready Cobra R and Ford GT - a tribute to the Ferrari-killing GT-40.
These two cars will be hitting the auction block at Barrett-Jackson this weekend in Las Vegas.
The 2000 Cobra R is an exceptionally rare vehicle, one of just 300 produced. This particular vehicle is the second ever built and served time as a pace car for Ford. The graphics and light bar have since been removed, and the car got a brand new paint job to cover up the ugliness left by the stickers. The Cobra R features a 385 horsepower 5.4 liter V8 engine, track-ready suspension, and that obnoxious wing. Though in fairness, the wing was useful, as the Cobra R was capable of going 175mph. Today, most of these cars remain in personal collections.
The second vehicle is the Ford GT, a low-slung tribute to Ford’s days of chasing down Ferrari on the race circuit. This is also the second car of its kind produced, and served mostly as a test bed for wear and tear on parts. It accumulated 35,000 miles before any Ford GT’s would be shipped out to eager customers, to ensure that the car would meet their expectations. Both cars will be on the auction block this weekend, and should bring a decent, if not princely, sum.
