And the Mustangs just keep on rolling. Ford is riding a wave of popularity right now, and new internals for the Mustang will be unveiled soon at the LA Auto Show. However, Ford isn’t waiting for LA to unleash news about its latest “off-road only” track car based on the Mustang.
Designed to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the iconic Boss Mustang’s victory at the Trans Am series, this Boss is built for road racing. The 302R will get the new 5.0 liter 32-valve that will be debuting at the LA Auto Show, with a six-speed transmission backing the 400-horsepower engine. Most of the details about this engine, nicknamed “Coyote,” are still being kept under wraps. Here is what we know.

As a road race car, it will get a racing-approved roll cage. It needs an updated suspension, and better brakes (you stop a lot in road racing), racing seats, fuel cell, and body harnesses. This special edition will be limited in production to just 50 units, with an MSRP around $79,000 - the same price range as the revitalized Cobra Jet Mustangs. If you’re feeling especially saucy, you can opt for the Grand Am Homologation Spec Package, which will add another $50,000 to the price tag (totaling $129,000).
