The LS1 has been a popular engine when it comes to engine swaps for a bump in horsepower in a very economical package. Well this build won’t be one of those stories, if anything it goes in the total opposite direction - with the swapping of the LS1 motor out in favor of a small block Ford. The owner even went on to say that his goal is to build the fastest Ford-powered Corvette out of his 2001 Z06 Convertible.
The owner Mike (username comecorrect) posted some enticing preview pictures and information regarding his intentions on Yellowbullet.
Mike’s garage already houses a powerful Corvette – his 2003 yellow ‘Vette that sports a Magnacharger supercharger poking out of the hood, which is his “200mph play toy.” No doubt Mike knows how to make power with the LS series motors but he wanted to be different. He pondered the idea of taking his old 408 stroker and doing some well-minded upgrades in hopes of putting this Z06 into the 7’s on a 315 drag radial at 3200 pounds, while still have the street-ability.

It might make a few of the hardcore Chevy fanatics cringe, but Mike doesn’t mind. This particular 408 has already gotten action in his previously owned ’92 Mustang that ran in the 8’s consistently. Some changes are being made to the motor (that was formerly supercharged) and it will now receive a large 101mm turbo. Additionally a more boost-friendly set of pistons were purchased that will bring the compression ratio to 8.5:1.
Mike's old 408 motor has been taken out of storage for revival

Mike has just gotten the 408 bolted up to the powerglide transmission and the 3.60 ratio rear gear set has been installed as well. For now the car rests in the garage next to Mike’s other Corvette. Mike looks forward to surprising some people with a stock-appearance Ford powered Corvette on the 1320 this year. We can’t wait to see Mike’s garage door roll-up to present us with the finished product.
