You’re probably all giddy with the recent news that the Ford is moving the base Mustang into the 21st century 11 years later with their new V-6. You can thank the free market for instigating this because the Camaro is the one that has raised the bar for performance and efficiency in this very strange current economical climate.

But you can also thank Jim Mazuchowski, Ford’s Mustang V6 program Chief, for being the guiding light in making the original Ponycar more competitive to the delight of us all—read the whole interview at TheMustangNews.com.
Jim grew up in a Ford family (remember those?) — his father was a veteran draftsman at Ford’s engine division and his brother also worked for the company with the Blue Oval. So this opportunity to head this current project was a no-brainer. His own tenure began in 1988 after graduating from MSU with a bachelor’s in mechanical engineering, where he subsequently was involved in engine program management, launching a series of V-8s, running manufacturing operations at the Cleveland plant (think 1970 351v4), strategic planning, product design and development.... and now this.

Says Jim, “I’m really fortunate and feel lucky about my career at Ford.” He continues, “I’ve had so many experiences and assignments. On top of that, I’ve worked with very smart, hard-working people.” Sounds like a car guy’s dream job, eh?

You possibly may be mistaken in thinking that Jim’s sole job was for the Mustang, but he and his peeps have been responsible for all of Ford’s new gas-powered V-6 engines. Jim says, “I really enjoy the variety of tasks, the pressure and urgency involved, along with the great people I get to work with.” Then, without the least bit of irony, he comments, “The work we do directly impacts the customer and is key to Ford’s fuel economy and sustainability strategy as well as quality and customer satisfaction.” Can you imagine an engineer saying the same thing five years ago? My, how things change!

Unexpected to me, Jim says his all-time favorite Ford is the F-150 due to its “sStrong performance, dependability and longevity—all reflective of the company’s image and values.” While the word “values” may give some people pause, if it’s something that’ll bring us a 305-hp V-6 for 2011, then I’ll happily change my values!
