A recent study, commissioned by the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) concluded that "Gasoline engine dominance will diminish, but it ain't going away." The recent experience of $5 per gallon gasoline has fractured the automotive industry, appearing now to talk out both sides of its mouth - promoting both vehicle performance and fuel economy at the same time.

"Green performance is one of the fastest-growing segments in the specialty-equipment and performance aftermarket industry," explained John Warniak, SEMA's vice president of vehicle technology. While the study highlighted a growing infusion of alternate drive technologies, the survey of seventeen industry powertrain experts concluded that gasoline engines will maintain the largest market share into 2015, even if gasoline prices were to hit $6 per gallon.
We compiled this news from SEMA, Ford, GM[/i].
The emerging wave of gasoline-direct injection engines, coupled with turbochargers, is delivering 6-cylinder engines with the performance of yesterday's V-8's and 4-cylinder power plants with V-6 mojo. Ford Motor recently announced a V-6 engine for the 2011 Mustang that will deliver more than 300 HP (229 kW). My own sources suggest that Ford engineers had to detune the 3.7-liter mill because initial testing showed substantially higher capability - perhaps as much as 340 HP (253 kW).

At General Motors, an upcoming 2.0-liter turbo engine is expected to provide 255 horsepower (190 kW) and 295 lb.-ft. of torque (400 Nm) for the Buick Regal GS. According to Chris Meagher, chief engineer for GM's Ecotec engines, “The VVT (variable valve timing) system is tuned to work in tandem with direct injection to achieve optimum fuel economy and lower emissions.”

Without a doubt, the spirit of performance remains and these new technologies deliver the potential of achieving both performance and economy at the same time. They also leave open the door for further enhancement by enthusiasts. To make the best use of future technologies, Gale Banks, president of Banks Power, suggests "Get an electronics background, or form an alliance with someone who has one."

Reduced weight and improved efficiency are being driven by the new Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards mandated by Congress. To our delight, a new golden age of real world performance may be emerging in lockstep.
