I need Help!

Ok....so the wife gave me the green light on a new engine for the 98 Cobra!

I am determined to have this car in MvW next month. So keep in mind, either I get it done or I finish off the current motor at the event (which should make for exciting pictures).

I pretty much know what I want.... but need some help on where to go

The current setup is.....

49K mile stock motor with Kenne Bell running 8psi (non-intercooled). Custom CAI with factory TB., 42# injectors, 90mm Lightning MAF with screen, factory headers with factory h pipe. Mac Catback 3". I put down 360rwhp and 332rwtq on dynojet with diablo chip. The motor I am pretty sure has a rod knock.

Here is what I am thinking, given my "budget".

1) FRPP Aluminator forged short block for NA. Yes, it does have 10.1 compression, but considering my boost is limited to about 13psi on this blower, I will need it to make power.

2) Snow methenal injection kit.

3) Accufab Throttle Body

4) IMRC Delete plates from MMR.

5) ARP head studs and high seal head gaskets.

6) short tube headers. I would go long tube, but don't have it in the budget for new x-pipe.

7) Home made (me) intake port/gasket match.

8) of course all the other gaskets, etc.

9) Reuse of the current heads, chains, etc. As they only have 49K on them.

10) New Dyno tune.

My questions......

1) Who do you guys recommend I buy the Short Block from. Any club discounts at the Ford dealers?

2) Who do you guys recommend to do the engine install?? Dante?? I want it done right and quick and of course cheap. I can't afford JBA. I thought about doing it myself, but it has been years since I did an engine install and that was on fox bodies. My understanding is you must drop the K member on these. I would also like a second opinion about the Knock it has now, since if it is valve train, that will effect my budget.

Is Dante pretty quick about these things? Other places??? Help!!

I put under this forum because I need to have as many members opinions as possible.

Last call racing sells the MMR short blocks cheaper then MMR sells their own stuff...and they are local too.....(best prices on short blocks hands down)

I think we talked about it once at the track. I was all set up to go with MMR, but money became an issue. then it went to the back burner.

but their turnaround time was at least 6 weeks and now that I got the green light, I want to do it quickly. The second major issue with them is that they use Iron Blocks, which ads another 60 pounds to front of my car. For them to upgrade to Aluminum block, it adds $1000.

I have also done some searching around. Other then the known pulley rub issue on the aluminator, I have not read of one failing. Even to HP levels around 750. Every engine builder (like mmr) I researched had some failures and then warranty issues stretched out to months. I might be able to buy one for slightly less or with better parts, but I think I am sticking with Ford this time.

Btw.... you are running the Meth injection, what psi boost are you running and what hp did Dante get for you?

If you don't mind me asking

the is set up at 10#'s and the meth kicks in at 2 psi, he gave me a 11.2 a/f and 15 degrees of timming, i made 347 on his mustang dyno after that i turned up the timming to 17 degrees and so far i went from 8.22 to a 7.96 with that set up....

Thanks 02gt..... I knew you would come through for me! Thanks for the help and info!

No one else?? Wow! Not even a response from Dante in his vendor forum?

Sorry Glen, but I'm not very good at these things, so I'm not going to offer any help on things I don't know.

You are ok.... you are always helping me out! I knew the minute I posted that you were going to chime in. You are always concerned. Now that I am involved with club, I would have to say you and a couple other have been the main reasons I keep involved. You, 02GT, Orange, papa, Gibs, and a couple others.

It is putting down about 400hp now and I want about 500-550 to the rear wheels.

Going to be my track car. Just on budget is all.

whats the suspension like.....with 400hp i would work on upgrading the suspension. lightening up the front end. that will benifit you more in the long run that having a 500+hp car that cant control it or use it properly.

98 Cobra huh? I know a few things about those and rod knocks, spun bearings, and new motors. :)

Also, just because we have MMR shortblocks listed on our site doesn't mean we (LCR) don't use other builders and can come up with different setups. I could type for days, but it'd be pretty easy to call us too.

Actually, this cars suspension is completely new. I set it up before I went with the Supercharger.

It has...

Jamex Springs
Tokiko (5 way) adj shocks
Urithane bushings
Maximum Motorsports (MM) Upper Control Arms
MM Adj lower Control Arms
MM full length Sub frame connectors
Rebuilt Rear with 3.73's and 31 splines
Solid Front Rack
MM Caster Camber Plates
Wheels
Spec stage 2 clutch
etc etc etc

It is pretty well set up.

Are you trying for 550 whp on that KB?

Yes, it is going to be tough with KB setup because there is no Intercooler and there is no Pressure Release Valve on the supercharger to keep it cool. The 2.1L is capable of the 20psi.

Going Snow Kit to keep it cool. And so I don't burn up the supercharger, I will eventually customer make a valve like the 03-04 KB's have to let off pressure. Anything above about 12-13 I will need this.

So, whatever power I can make with 12-13 of boost for now. Which I am hoping is near 475rwhp. Thats 100rwhp more then I made at 8psi with a crappy intake. I currently redoing the intake to 4" tubing, Accufab TB, going with IRMC deletes, fresh bottom end, and some match porting on intake/heads. Possibly adding Ford GT cams. Adding headers and a good tune.

Once I can get the boost up to about 17 or so, I should hit the 550rwhp I am looking for.

I am going to redo the intake setup as mentioned above, and will most likely try to get Dante to tune it. Then bring it out Mustangs vs. World and see what I can get out of it.
