...installing a shaker air-diverter...

mach 1's come with a shaker. the main function of this shaker is to draw cold air from outside and feed it into the filter connected to the intake. the problem with the shaker is that it's not as efficient as it can be. the total length of the shaker is about 12 inches. the part of the shaker where the air goes down into is at the front of the shaker. air normally travels the length of the shaker, comes back after hitting the back of the shaker, and then is fed into the tube that connects to the heat shield. the air-diverter basically cuts that distance in half, making the shaker way more efficient, and also making the intake air temp cooler; as the air doesn't have to travel as far to be fed into the tube connected to the heat shield.

tools needed:

10mm socket
ratchet

total install time: 15 mins

here it is, the air-diverter:

it's a very simple device but it does a LOT. tests have shown it brings down the i.a.t. anywhere between 6-10*.

the first thing you want to do is pop off the two drainage hoses under the shaker, then unscrew the two bolts holding the shaker into the brackets.

the drainage hoses are under the driver side part of the shaker, marked with arrows:

the two bolts are on each side of the shaker, both are also marked with arrows.

after you remove the hoses and bolts, you can then disconnect the tubes leading to the heat shield and pop off your shaker. you should have something that looks like this:

you want to flip it upside down and then remove the six bolts holding the top part of the shaker down. the bolts you should remove are shown by the arrows:

once those bolts are removed you can flip it over, without the top part of the shaker and you'll place the air-diverter right in the middle. it should look like this:

once you've done that, you can place the top part of the shaker back on, making sure there's tension in the air-diverter so it stays in place.

after you've done that, all you gotta do is reverse the order you did everything to get everything back on. the finished product should look like this:

enjoy your cooler i.a.t.'s. :)

thanks guys... it's a real simple install. while gains cannot be dynoed, tests taken of i.a.t. without the diverter and with it, have shown temp. changes for the better. if anything, it'll free up a few ponies which would have been taken away by the heat. nothing major, but every little bit helps. :)

Nice write-up.
My diverter showed up in the mail yesterday and I'll probably install it tomorrow. Plus, I think my 'new-to-me' Mach just developed the dreaded "shaker rattle" I've read about, so I'll address that too...
