Military Pay Raise

Subject: Military Pay Raise
This Cindy Williams is NOT the "Laverne & Shirley" Cindy Williams.
She is an Assistant Director for National Security in the Congressional Budget Office.

Military Pay
This is an Airman's response to Cindy Williams' editorial piece in the
Washington Times about MILITARY PAY, it should be printed in all
newspapers across America.

Ms. Cindy Williams wrote a piece for the Washington Times, denouncing
the pay raise(s) coming service members' way this year citing that she
stated 13% wage increase was more than they deserve.

A young Airman from Hill AFB responds to her article below.

He ought to get a bonus for this.

"Ms Williams: I just had the pleasure of reading your column "Our GIs
earn enough", and I am a bit confused. Frankly, I'm wondering where
this vaunted overpayment is going, because as far as I can tell, it
disappears every month between DFAS (The Defense Finance and
Accounting Service) and my bank account. Checking my latest earnings
statement I see that I make $1,117.80 before taxes per month.
After taxes, I take home $874.20. When I run that through the calculator, I
come up with an annual salary of $13,413.60 before taxes, and
$10,490.40, after.

I work in the Air Force Network Control Center where I am part of the
team responsible for a 5,000 host computer network I am involved with
infrastructure segments, specifically with Cisco Systems equipment.
A quick check under jobs for Network Technicians in the
Washington, D.C. Area reveals a position in my career field,
requiring three years experience with my job. Amazingly, this job does
NOT pay $13,413.60 a year. No, this job is being offered at $70,000 to
$80,000 per annum........... I'm sure you can draw the obvious
conclusions.

Given the tenor of your column, I would assume that you NEVER had the
pleasure of serving your country in her armed forces. Before you take
it upon yourself to once more castigate congressional and DOD
leadership for attempting to get the families in the military's lowest
pay brackets off of WIC and food stamps, I suggest that you join a
group of deploying soldiers headed for AFGHANISTAN; I leave the choice
of service branch up to you. Whatever choice you make, though, opt for
the SIX month rotation: it will guarantee you the longest possible
time away from your family and friends, thus giving you full
"deployment experience."

As your group prepares to board the plane, make sure to note the
spouses and children who are saying good-bye to their loved ones.
Also take care to note that several families are still unsure of how
they'll be able to make ends meet while the primary breadwinner is gone
obviously they've been squandering the "vast" piles of cash the
government has been giving them.

Try to deploy over a major holiday; Christmas and Thanksgiving are
perennial favorites.. And when you're actually over there, sitting in
a foxhole, shivering against the cold desert night; and the flight
sergeant tells you that there aren't enough people on shift to relieve
you for chow, remember this: trade whatever MRE (meal-ready- to-eat)
you manage to get for the tuna noodle casserole or cheese tortellini, and
add Tabasco to everything. This gives some flavor.

Talk to your loved ones as often as you are permitted; it won't nearly
be long enough or often enough, but take what you can get and be
thankful for it. You may have picked up on the fact that I disagree
with most of the points you present in your opened piece.

But, tomorrow from KABUL , I will defend to the death your right to say it.
You see, I am an American fighting man, a guarantor of your First
Amendment rights and every other right you cherish. On a daily basis,
my brother and sister soldiers worldwide ensure that you and people
like you can thumb your collective nose at us, all on a salary that is
nothing short of pitiful and under conditions that would make most
people cringe. We hemorrhage our best and brightest into the private
sector because we can't offer the stability and pay of civilian
companies.

And you, Ms. Williams, have the gall to say that we make more than we
deserve? You can kiss my royal red a**!!!

Absolutely GD right! very astute reply.. Washington times, New York Post, New York times etc.... All as far left as possible! Carl Marx would be so proud of the good work they do! People like Mrs. Williams dont realize that if they achieve thier agenda (a socialist state) they will not have the freedom to write as they do... People of her ilk will never realise what is obvious to so many that Freedom is Not Free... Freedom for the many has always been and will always be protected by THE FEW... Such a small percentage of the population serve or have served, it is too easy for liberal journalist's to spout off such a load of crap... Sorry to say, many people take thier words as gospel. It takes a major attack to make people realise the importance of the armed forces. Plus (as recent history has shown) the country too soon forgets after a major attack.
We are hated throughout the world, simply because of our achievments, so many want what we have, and failing that, they want to tear us down..
Make no mistake! We are at a cusp of history, how we proceed will determine whether this country will survive into the future.

Stand by for Heavy Rolls! I was in during the last Liberal administration... It was hard as hell.. Clinton cut us to the bone, early outs, no advancement, no pay raises...One month we didn't even get PAID!!! Be prepared becuase happy days are here again (for liberals and welfare babies).. I have less than 2 years to retirement, I pray to God I still get a retirement!! 20 years service means nothing to them. Allready they have tried to push legislation which would curtail military retirement benefits, what is next? Anything can happen people, nothing is to far fetched or out of the question... When time comes to cut spending guess who is 1st on the chopping block.. Be prepared, its comming...

Whens the last time a CA state employee had thier ship hit by suicide bombers killing 12, or chased down pirates in the Gulf, or been in a convoy ambushed by insurgents!
Fox, how can you compare Military service with CA state employee's?
Sorry, but this is the wrong crowd for the liberal agenda... I would think that you would've figured that out by now.

That comparison just wont work here man. What was the pay for the State job to begin with? Was it more than say an E-5 makes. I honestly can not complain about my pay. I have been in for 14+ years and am an E-6. Any increase will be good but I live comfortably. My wife makes good money as well so that helps out.

Easy comparison is to look at the civis in the Middle East doing the same job and they get 2/3 times more pay. People in power that make our life decisions need to experience what our life is. It's easy to turn off the tv..it isnt easy to live that life.

This is using the 2009 pay scale of an E-5 with over 5 years of service with the SEALs. Base pay is $2500/mo. Add in Sea Pay (over 4) $300/mo. I don't know what is the current payout for Combat/Hazardous, dive, and jump pay is currently. But I'll just use what I got in 1992. Combat/Hazardous duty pay-$150/mo. Dive-$50/mo. Jump-$150.
So base on that a SEAL Operator with 5 years of service is making $3150 a month, that's $37,800/yr. Well folks, I know for a fact that an operator with 5 years on the Teams and combat experience can EASILY command a $150,000/year pay in the civilian world. They would do the same thing as they did in the military, but they will be provided for. Better equipment and weapons and better quarters.

So, some say the military members are overpaid. I don't think so!!!

As for the CA state workers having to take pay cut. CA state employees are some of the better pay govt employees in the country. I can't speak for all CA state employees, but I can tell you, CHP and State Parole are two of the highest paid law enforcement agencies in the country. So, even with their paycuts and furlough, their pay is still some of the highest. Before the cutback, a 5 year veteran of the Parole dept can easily bring in over $100k/year with OT. Oh yeah, state parole starting salary was $65K/yr including a take home car. I know this because I have friends who have went over to that department and I am on the "to be hired" list once the budget allow for new hires. State employees are not hurting like many others even with their furloughs

dont get me wrong im sure they work hard as well (CA state employees) i think they are suffering because how the state is in debt. i agree with james(yose) im a e-5 with 5 years abotu to be e-6 with 6 i do live good but i do live under more stress and dangers then the average american worker. and it sucks being away from fam and friend 3.5 raise is nice. hehe and dotn buy the comemricals we get 30 days of paid leave a year. ask any service member how easy it is to take leave lol usually very hard next to impossible especially in a leadership position as iw as LPO

I have 60 days of leave on the books. On sea duty it is nearly impossible to take leave. We are lucky if we get a week or two before a deployment. I'm tired of 12-18 hour days:nonono:

Im not gonna beat a dead horse, you guys pretty much hit it. We deserve way more than we get I'll tell you that. The leave thing pisses me off. I know with the Marine Corps if you want to go out of bounds on a 96 you HAVE to take leave. Its ****in stupid. You have to waste your days off on days everybody else gets off anyway. And its not like other jobs where they only dock you the days you would have been working. You get hit for everday you are gone.

They approve the budget! Don't be silly, please.

Be glad you weren't in when Carter was Prez! Carter vetoed the budget because Congress gave us a measly 7.xx% increase and he told them to cut it to less than 4%. I believe they came back with 3.4% at the last hour and the government didn't shut down. Remember...........this was when inflation was 18%+!!!!

Let's be real guys. The military has ALWAYS been underpaid. It's not going to change.

If you joined the military for the money, you were silly!
