For the second consecutive year, a Mustang has taken the Koni Challenge title, beating out the likes of BMW and Porsche in the GS class. The season closer at Virginia International Raceway was dominated by pony cars, as the #86 Sunoco Camaro joined its Mustang and Challenger compatriots on the field. But even though Rehagen Racing finished sixth place overall, it was enough in points to maintain their large lead and take the title.
The winners of the eleventh race in the series were James Gue and Bret Seafuse, who took the lead in lap sixty-six and never gave it up. Ken Wilden and co-driver Dean Martin took the title with the Rehagen Racing Mustang after placing sixth. This is their first title and Ford’s second, displaying the racing prowess of the Mustang on the circuit once more. Gue and Seafuse had to settle for a second place title, as they did last year when they lost to Scott Maxwell and Joe Foster. This year, they lost by just eight points, 309 to 317, in yet another tight series.
This was the first Grand-Am race in recent history that featured competitors from all Big Three manufacturers. The Sunoco Camaro performed admirably, qualifying thirteenth and moving up as high as third place before clutch problems benched them. But in fairness to the bowtie, they just shook down the car a week earlier, and did not have an entire season to get in sync. Next season promises to be highly competitive and pony car laden.
