Kevin Marti says there was only one 1969 Mach I built with a 428 SCJ Ram Air engine, 4-speed transmission and 4.30-ratio Traction Lock rear end, in Champagne Gold and this is the one. Scheduled to appear at the upcoming Mecum Auction in Kissimmee, FL, this example displays the SCJ heritage with distinction.
We found this Mustang that was just getting ready to be sold over at the Mecum Auctions
Originally introduced in 1968 as a concept car, the 1969 Mach I Mustang was one of three new production Mustangs that year. The familiar fastback body was fitted with with simulated side scoops on the quarter panels, aggressively angled front air dam, rear pedestal spoiler and the ram-air “shaker” hood scoop option. The shaker scoop mounted directly onto the engine and fit through a cutout in the hood.

Performance thrill seekers could order the "Drag Pack" option, specifying a choice of either 4.30- or 3.91-ratio rear axle gears. More than just a set of gears, the Drag Pack also delivered the Super Cobra Jet 428 cubic-inch motor, with external oil cooler and a few other minor changes. The distinction afforded by the Super Cobra Jet engine lay in its design improvements to withstand the higher RPM requirements of 1320 racing.

The SCJ benefited from an improved crankshaft, as well as rods, pistons, flywheel and harmonic balancer. Connecting rods, in particular, were the proven 427 "LeMans" cap screw connecting rods, while the Cobra Jet mill made do with a press fit stud to hold the rod cap. The Holley 4-bbl carb fed gas into the cylinders and, at a compression ratio of 10.6 to 1, the Mach was rated officially at 335 HP.

Accolades began piling up for the Mach I. It was named “the quickest four-person production car” by Car Life magazine in a March 1969 road test. But, when Danny Ongais won the NHRA 1969 Spring Nationals in a Mickey Thompson-prepared Mach I, the car's place in automotive fame was secured and it became one of the most collectable Mustangs ever.

According to the owner, the Champagne Gold paint on this example is original and the Mach sports a mere 20,127 original documented miles. If this fires up your need to own a stellar example of the breed, you'd best head down to Kissimmee, FL, for the Mecum Auction. It is going on the block on Saturday, January 30, around mid-morning. There's bound to be a number of like-minded collectors there.
