Question about personal plates

Okay, the stang i bought had personal plates and the person wants them still.

I went to the DMV today to get temp plates and normal ones back. They said that I need to wait until I get my registration card in the mail with *my* name on it before they can do it...

Is this true? Is there any other way to get it done?

I want to make sure I understand

You wanted a temp regisrataion and return the Personalized plates at the same time?

Did you buy from dealer or private party?

You should have received a release of liability, change of ownership, registration, and the pink slip from the seller. Once you have those, you can go to DMV to get a temp registration.

If I am not mistaken, doesn't he need to keep the old plates until registration clears on a Private seller deal?

I am not sure.

I am not sure.

I kept one of them and she kept the other, I kept the back one with tags. When this is all sorted, I'm going to give her the back one back.

I'm not sure on that. Yosemiddy just purchased a car with a personalized plate, maybe he can chimed in with that answer. Either him or MysticAngel can probably tell you what they had to do. But I think they kept the plate and not the seller.

Yeah the DMV was giving us a huge PITA with the tags. I wanted to give him back his tags but in order to do that we would have had to not drive the car and surrender the tags to them. It is a pain but do able. I spoke with him and he said just keep the tags and then I got my Tags to match hers.

She's okay with what we're doing with me keeping one for now so I don't get pulled over and am able to use the car.

ok, since I'm a huge personalized plate fanatic and have done this a few times here it is.....

when you go to the DMV, you need to tell them the previous owner kept the plates since they were personalized and you need new plates. Upon registration they have to issue you regular plates. You can drive without plates for 10 calendar days since thats the time frame DMV gives you to report a newly purchased vehicle, just make sure you carry bill of sale and proof of insurance.

if you wanted to keep those plates and she wanted to release them to you (which is not the case) you would need to have her sign them off to you, using the personalized plate application form. It has a section to "release" interest in the plate, since it belongs to the person, not the car.

you won't be able to register the car with those plates unless you have that release from the previous owner.

in your case its quicker and easier just to have told the DMV the car didn't have any plates at all, sign a statement of facts stating so, then you would have walked out with two new plates.

I am glad I am getting Tennessee tags. No smog and no pain in the butt at the DMV. Actually I dont have DMV to get tags at. i get mine at the courthouse. I did my new vanity tags through the mail.
