Whenever a Shelby Cobra crosses the auction block, expectations are always high. Shelby-built cars have demanded a premium at auctions, with a rare Daytona going on to sell for over $5 million and setting an all-time record for American car auction sales. Yet another very rare and unique Cobra is going to auction this January.
According to Racer.com, Shelby Cobra CSX 2196 aka “The Flip Top”, will be auctioned by RM Auctions this January at the Automobiles of Arizona show.
What makes CSX 2196 so unique is its “clamshell” design that allowed for easier access to the engine bay. Both the hood and the trunk would flip open so mechanics could easily access the tightly confined car (for example to change the spark plugs on a Cobra, you had to remove the wheels). Legendary race car driver Ken Miles led the design and development, and the car eventually would go on to be the benchmark for the 427 Cobras that followed.
CSX 2196 still sports its Guardsmen Blue livery, black interior, and white racing stripes. While technically a prototype, it was raced at several important races of yore including Monterey and the Goodwood Festival of Speed. It will hit the auction block on January 22 at the Biltmore Resort in Phoenix, AZ, along with several other rare concept cars including the Chrysler Thunderbolt Concept Car by LeBaron and a 1930 Duesenberg Model A.
