Rebuilding alternator

Has anyone here rebuilt their alternator? Mine is failing and a new one is 220 bucks... So has anyone rebuilt it? My dad said it would be better to do that than to spend the money on a new one. I looked online, and it looks like the biggest thing is replace the brushes or the voltage regulator.

Anyone done this before?
