There is a lot of history behind the Shelby name, which should be expected from a company founded almost fifty years ago. After getting out of the racing game, Carroll Shelby decided to airmail a proposal to AC cars in England to produce their small lightweight 260 cars and install a Ford V8 into them. Shelby American was founded in California in March of 1962.
According to Left Lane News, Shelby is renaming his company from its current Shelby Autos to Shelby American, to get back in touch with the founding history of his company.
In a prepared statement, Shelby himself said “Enthusiasts have asked us many times to bring back the Shelby American name over the past several years. Using the Shelby American name will better connect our current vehicles to our heritage of building great cars like the G.T.350 and Cobra.” The name is clearly a throwback to early times, as the Shelby-American name was around for the most iconic cars, including the Cobra and and Shelby GT’s.

Other than the name change, nothing about the business is changed. Shelby American remains the same company it was yesterday, just with an old-school game. Kind of like the throwback jerseys that are so popular in the NFL. There are a lot of interesting cars on the horizon for Shelby, though don’t expect the Cobra symbol to go away anytime soon.

That came to Shelby in a dream. Seriously.
