Numbers and characters mean?
The Vehicle Identification Number, abbreviated VIN is a seventeen digit alphanumeric sequence printed on the metal plate and attached to the top left corner of the car dashboard (inside lower left corner of your windshield if you are looking from inside your vehicle). The number is clearly visible from the outside through the windshield and contains important information about the vehicle such as manufacturer, model and chassis type, engine type, gross vehicle Weight (GVW), year of manufacture, plant code, sequential number, etc.
-VIN Number Interpreted.
1-Country where vehicle was built (U.S.A.(1, 4, or 5), Canada (2), Mexico (3), Japan (J), Korea (K), England (S), Germany (W), Italy (Z))
2-Manufacturer (Audi (A), BMW (B), Buick (4), Cadillac (6), Chevrolet (1), Chrysler (C), Dodge (B), Ford (F), GM Canada (7), General Motors (G), Honda (H), Jaguar (A), Lincoln (L), Mercedes Benz (D), Mercury (M), Nissan (N), Oldsmobile (3), Pontiac (2 or 5), Plymouth (P), Saturn (8), Toyota (T), Volvo (V))
3-Make (i.e. G=GM, F=Ford, etc).
4/5- Model (i.e. Sunbird, Achieva, Grand AM, etc.)
6-Body Style (i.e. 2 door, 4 door, coupe, hatchback, etc.).
7-Restraints (i.e. Manual Seat Belts, Automatic Seat Belts, etc.),
8-Engine Type and Size (i.e. 2.3 Liter, V4, 3.3 Liter V6, etc.).
9- Check Digit . This one is somewhat complex to explain, it is used to check previous VIN numbers against a specific set of formula.
