<div>At the recent EAA Fly-In at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh,Wis., Ford Motor Company offered thousands of aviation enthusiasts attending the Experimental Aviation Association’s (EAA) AirVenture Oshkosh the opportunity to witness a one-of-a-kind racing exhibition. The Mustangs Unleashed “Wings vs. Wheels” contest pitted Vaughn Gittin, Jr. and Doug Van Den Brink driving two Shelby GT500 Mustangs against two high-performance aerobatic aircraft on runways at the EAA AirVenture grounds. Throw in some simulated napalm drops and smoke screens and you have a real party.<br />

To accomplish the stunt, from a standing start, the cars and planes accelerated approximately 7,000 feet to the end of their respective runways and back to midfield. The Mustangs exceeded 150 mph by the time they reached the finish line. The planes flew at more than 200 mph as they attempted to run down the 2010 Mustangs. The planes and cars crossed paths at the center of the runway accented by a huge pyrotechnics fireball the length of a football field.<br />

Opposing the Mustangs above the runways was the Red Bull Edge 540 flown by race pilot Kirby Chambliss and a Castrol Aviator Extra 330SC piloted by fellow racer Michael Goulian. Chambliss’ Edge 540 produces 320 horsepower from a 540 cubic-inch Lycoming AEIO 540 engine, while Goulian’s 330SC is powered by a 340 horsepower Lycoming AEIO 580.<br />

The boys over at Livernois Motorsports modified the two GT500's with aviation style smoke machines and shot this behind the scenes footage of the event along with edited footage from the display. Enjoy the expert driving and flying from this once in a lifetime event.<br />
