05+ MID exhaust setups

GT400SC

Anyone done this yet?

I have long argued to many of my friends who have 04 and before GTs, Bullitts, and Cobras that their exhaust note will always be superior to anything I can do to my 05 GT.

The reason being, in MY opinion is the midship mounting of the mufflers instead of hanging out the back like many a ricer. It seems to me that even with their 2.25" diameter pipes as opposed to my 2.5" pipes, having the muffler under the seats allows for the tones to somehow magnify, refine itself and resonate better as it travels the last several feet to the exhaust tip. On my car, that trip is about 8 inches. Not much chance to improve the sound. I have searched for short versions of the old classic "Cherry Bomb" or "Thrush" mufflers and wondered what it would be like to mount these UNDER the car and just have 2.5" pipe all the way out the back to some nice 3.5" tips.

Then I saw this:

http://www.americanmuscle.com/pypes-2005gt-midmuffler-catback.html

I'm not endorsing Pypes" brand but the idea is out there and apparently everyone's review of the sound is very good.

Anyone tried this or know anyone who's done this or even heard of this or am I out there "drinkin' the coolaid" by myself? LOL

Here's an install HOW TO with photos:

I think that is why the Prochamber that MAC makes sounds so good. It makes it flow better than a H/X pipe and it kind of acts like that^^^. Basically distorts the flow as it goes through the pipe and creates the sound well before the actual muffler, in turn creating more resonance then it is amplified by the actual muffler. You can definately hear the difference with the prochamber. It sounds great. The flowmaster axlebacks have a good tone to them.

DISCLAIMER: I am no expert so I could be completely off base. Come saturday and see 1WKDRSH's car. he has the MAC setup and it sounds good.

Interesting video. Keep in mind this is upside down. You'll see what I mean.

This guy did the install, mounted a cam under the car near the differential (lower left corner) and apparently wanted to see how close to the driveshaft the mufflers get under road conditions and during deflection.

interesting video, wow that is alot of travel back there. I wonder if that car has been lowered or has any suspension mods. That much travel makes me think that it does not.

As far as I can tell, Pypes is the only company that sells this as a kit although any good muffler shop could accomplish the same thing. I can't find any other company with a similar setup. Heck, I know how to weld and have two welders here at home. The mufflers for this are only $52 at Jegs.

Hmmmmm.........

I'd just have to have someone fabricate a couple of tailpipes for me (axlebacks).

My old brain is cookin' up something...........

If you come up with something put a patent on it and sell your idea. This is just my opinion guys. I like the sound of my JBA's With the headers it will give me a even deeper tone. I cant wait for W.S. performance hsop to give me a price so I can purchase them. You guys have to remember that old muscle car sound you want is comeing from bigger cubic inches and diffrent cams. Have any of you heard a 05-07 with cams. They sound nasty as hell and sound like a big block mach 1 or cobra jet stang. Keep your mufflers and add a x-pipe and headers from there spend the money on cams. Cams alone will give you a added 80 to 100HP. Then throw your super charger on top. Like I said just m opinion. I am going with cams after NOS. I may just go with cams but I dont want to tear into my engine my self nor do I want to pay a california shop 90$ a hour and have to buy a SCT tune. So my option is the NOS now till I can make a contact with a shop that deals with Diablo or go home crack open a beer in the good old midwest and pull windveil off the lazyboy to the garage lol

A little off-topic but one item I AM working on patenting is a pair of headlight covers that mimic the 1970 look. These retro covers are about 1/8th inch thick, urethane, painted to match the body color and adhere with 3M tape or velcro (or should I say "hook and loop"?).

I made a prototype part and from that made a silicone mold. Since the parts are mirror-images of each other, only one mold is necessary. You just flip the part depending on which headlamp it goes on.

OK, back to exhaust talk.

YEAH CAMS!!!

Definately the way to go for that loping sound. But if you have crap mufflers, it still won't sound right.

Maybe cams AND the mid-mufflers? Hmmm.........

I had a custom fabricated exaust made for my car about 2 months ago. i used flowmaster 10 series race mufflers. all i can say is it sounds mean as hell. i had a 04 cobra rev at me the day after i instaled them and when i reved back he decided he didnt want any part of my car. although he could have beat me because i only have your basic boltons and 3.90 gears for now. soon i will have the kenne bell on and then its game on. but any ways i had them welded in behind my H pipe and used 4'' tips to finish it off i would post a sound clip but i am about 8 thousand miles away from my car on board the USS Ronald Reagan.

Very interesting.

I'm wondering about a couple of Borla "S" type (Stingers) mounted amidship and 4" tips. That would sound BAD @ss!

Back to the muffler subject... 1WKDRSH dropped of the shirts and cash for him and Emilio last night. His exhaust sounded great!! I even heard it through his cell phone while I was giving him directions to my house. It is quiet as hell at idle but as soon as you step on it it sounds sweet.

GT400SC I really like those covers you made. Thats awesome that you made them yourself!!
I personally always wished that I didnt have those plastic covers on my headlights (similiar to the Foose Mustang). I intend to put the GT500 front bumper on my car but does anyone make something like that besides Foose. I think Foose's are integrated into the front bumper. Not a separate piece..

So, I have in my garage, laying under my car, two Borla "S" Stinger mufflers and two 4" tips, all cut off a Cobra.

Should I or shouldn't I?

I have all the parts to duplicate the Borla Axle-back kit ($600+) but then it would defeat the purpose of this thread, wouldn't it?

So, I'm debating....

Mount the Stingers inboard and omit the normal mufflers and exit thought the 4" Borla tips...OR...
Recreate the Borla Axle-back units and not even mess with welding under the car (easier).

What would YOU do?

If you think mounting the mufflers amidship, then you must subscribe to the idea that they might just actually sound better there. That, or you want to punish me with extra work.

If you say take the easy way out and hang it all out the back, then you might believe it won't make any difference in sound or you're just as lazy as I am! LOL

It's a lot of work! A hefty "experiment" to mount them mid-car. I'd have to cut up my pristine pipes behind the x-pipe to install the mufflers.

So much easier to make an axle-back.

But then, I would only wonder, what if...........?

Note: My sig used to say S U C K S but the porn filter removed it and now I have to say "sux". I even saw the word C L A S S I F I E D and the A S S was bleeped out. WTH?
