2000 pi heads and cam install.

This is for 02gt:
This CAN be done without pulling motor. Just have to losen engine mounts and life up one side of the motor at a time, by placing a small 2x4 on a jack and lift the motor by the oil pan. Dont take the engine mount bolts all the way off just losen them to the last thread. I had my whole motor out. I;m sure you can tell by my pics.
This is a fuzzy pic. Of me taking out the stock pi cams.

thanks, i was just researching the effects of the lobe seperation, the tighter the lob the riskier but more power... i just need to know what a stokc engine can tolerate if i don't put a new MMR short block this fall.

were you able to pull the timming chain off with out removing the cover? i have seen that in muscle mustangs and fast fords, appearently there is a special tool pull the chain apart

just stick with the .550 lift. I found out the hard way. I was gonna go with stage 3 crower cams. But they wouldn't turn over at all. Required major head porting. Almost wish i had kept those cams and ported my heads then.

Buy that tool. It'll save you 4-6 hours of install time. If the chain falls you gotta take whole cover off and retime it and all. That takes time. But I had it all off anyway.

No, it sounds real nice. Not like a 5.SLOW but its got a nice cam sound to it. You can tell its loping. I bout fidanza timing gears for mine while i was at it. Just helps to time it.

If you use the 278 cams you will need to clearance/ flycut the tops of all 8 pistons, requiring the dissassembly of the engine farther than you want to go on this project.

Tool for holding the cam chain in place can be bought at Anderson ford, its called a cam chain retention tool for about 29 dollars. The work saved when using this tool, priceless.

In using the Fidanza adjustable gears, I drilled and used dowls to insure a no movement/ loosen condition which will wipe out your engine when the smaller bolts on the cam gears loosen up.

A lot has been written on the mod you are mentioning here, these suggestions are the ones that work. You can go farther on the choice of cam, only it requires more work and money. The cams Brian has is about max for the heads he is currently using, any more cam is a waste as the heads will not flow enough to take advantage of the additional duration. At this point you must go to highly ported and reworked ports/ flowed heads, ie; the new trick flow 2 valve heads to get any more power out of a n/a engine. To get the most out of your stock heads and new performance cams, installing long tube headers along with a throttle body & plenum with a big cold air kit will make a difference over just running cams with stock heads. Hope this helps, JK

jk you and i need to talk!! you seem to really know your stuff!!! im thinking of installing a friends old cams, i have an mmr 900, and a procharger, the cam is a blower cam to our knowledge. ill have to put up the specs and all that at another point in time, but for now, i have two questions!! first, it was mentioned to me that porting my heads would be a wast of time, especially with a blower, and said cams!! and the reasoning was that the 98 cobra heads flow so well any way. do you know this to be true?? or is it bad garb?? second question, this set of cams that i want to install has one indevidual cam with a very small blemish on what i would say is the fore most bearing!! do you know if there are specafications on this kind of damage? if its within its limitations for being a good cam then ill use it other wise, since its a custom cut set of cams ill have to ave another cut!!
