alright i know what youre thinkin, should a tranny question really be in the open discussion section!!! well sure if its on a neon!!! bare with me here, this tranny belongs to a good friend of mine who has already bn duped out of over a grand due to this problem!!! and he doesnt have that kind of money to be spending especially if it isnt actually fixing his car!!! so heres the deal, hes got a 2003 dodge neon!!! when he comes to a stop the rpms drop to 500 or below, and the car shakes like a mug!!! its shaking so bad that hes sheard 3 sets of motor mounts in the past year alone!!! hes spent well over a grand now looking for a mechanic that can fix it like i said and hes coming up empty handed!!! so any way if puts the car in neutral then its all good and the car comes back to life. atl has suggested that its possibly loose converter bolts, and im thining its the fwd bearings that sit between his tq converter and the input shaft!!! im really tryin to help him out and get his car runnin right so he dont have to break himself trying to get the stupid thing runnin in a good order!!! so im lookin for thoughts theories ideas anything really that can help the cause!!!! tahtnks in advance yall i know if its fixable this club can figure it out!!!

Gee, sounds like a lock-up torque converter gone bad. Drives fine but coming down to a stop or drops it into drive it feels like a manual trans that just had the clutch dropped, Hence it stalls and breaks motor mounts, probably tweeked the flex plate too. just my .02 cents. The Torque converter is justa fluid coupling that has a set of turbines in it, one set is attached to the main housing spinning with the engine, the other is attached to the input shaft(but not the Trans oil pump which is driven from the snout of the torque converter). If the two get locked( due to a bearing seizure or Interference) there is no slippage and it causes the engine to stall out. Hope this helps out.

well that sounds dead on, but the motor has never stalled!!! so i could probably just tear out the tranny replace those input shaft bearings, probably replace the flex plate, and re torque everything and hed more than likely be gravy,,,, do i get ya right???

It sounds like you have two major problems that it could be. I would say that after pulling the tranny if the bearings are that bad the torque converter should have more than allowable movement. Basically you could shake it with your hands and see the bearings on the input shaft move. If they all look ok then I would say that the converter is locking up some how. I do know that after swapping/removing/repairing an auto trans there is a certain sequence you have to do to insure trans fluid reaches everything right. Must run through all the gears basically before going anywhere. Sorry man but with auto trans there are hundreds of things it could be. My best oppinion is that in order for the motor mounts to be broken like that he either neutral drops the crap outta the car or something is locking up when it is not supposed to.

Hmm do you know for sure it's those Input shaft bearings, seems like a lot of work just to find out that they were'nt bad to begin with. I did a little bit of research on the Neons, the transmissions were suffering from a bad Electronic controlled valve body, causing it to shift hard, slip and cause the problems you are having. The valves in the valve body would gum up and stick or the module would otherwise go bad with no codes. I'd start with a proper diagnosis by a competent Tech (unfortunately the "stealership"). As far as "good as gravy"? No if the flex plate is tweeked I mean it may be distorted and needs replaced. If indeed you find those Input shaft bearings are bad, what caused them to go bad btw? You ever hear of a can of worms?

man youre right, well i was thinkin, that if those bearings are bad it may be, maybe just wear and tear or some retard was tryin to race the stupid little car before my friend bought it!!! but if those bearings are bad then replacing them shouldnt be too bad and would possibly solve the problem permanently!!! mostlikely not though!!! and by the by,the stealership was the first place he took it and its still havin these problems, they put a new set of mounts on it, and fixed a little rubber flap in the gas tank and called it a day!!!

Sorry man that is about all I can help ya with from here. Hope ya get it figured out. I have heard and not just saying this cause Dodge sucks donkey balls.....but I have heard that the tranny's on them Neons are too weak for the engines and will disentegrate themselves with too many mods. Or people driving them like they stole them. I would get it fixed and sell it before it breaks again.

oh, so ya say. well this guy drives the car like hes afraid of the power, if ya know what i mean. he doesnt ever drive above the speed limit, nor does he treat it bad in the least he always keeps up w the regularly schedualed maint. so im thinking if i can fix it for him this time he wont have a problem with it in the future, because he treats the car so well. but honestly he doesnt have the money for any fixes, so anything i do will have to be either on me or will take a great deal of time for him to save up for, and really with the car shearing motor mounts it doesnt seem like he has that time. another thing that he just told me, is that his tranny was fixed about a year ago. so its sounding more and more like these guys just didnt do their job right!!! he even had problems with it leaking fluid when he first got it back, he took it to another place to have it re sealed!!! so i guess ill just have to pull the tranny and see what comes of it!!!
