You never know. I have a SNELL 2005 Simpson but at Barona, they never even looked at it or asked. At Qualcom, they might. Not sure.

I think Snell 2000 is the oldest one allowed.

As stated above, if they look

Back when I was lead tech inspector at the Q, the rule was that you needed a DOT or Snell (whatever) helmet in order to race, and I looked at every one. Things may have changed, since it was quite a while back.

Barona requires a helmet for all drivers. NHRA rules, last time I checked, say that you only need one if you're running quicker than 14-flat in the quarter mile, but since you never know who you'll be lined up next to at the T&T, I never run without a helmet despite the fact that my car is a painfully slow V6. Helmets must be Snell or SFI spec, and 10 or fewer years old, if memory serves. For our purposes, open-faced helmets are allowed, and there's some argument about whether they're actually safer than full-face helmets in cars with operational airbags.

Thanks Paul!

Here is a quote from the 2009 NHRA Rule Book Stock Class Section 8A.10/Driver/Helmet Page 112

For all 10.00 and slower cars, either an open-face or a full-face Snell M2000, M2005, K2005, SA2000, SA2005, SFI 31.2A or 41.2A helmet mandatory; shield permitted (goggles prohibited)

For all 9.99 and quicker cars, a full face Snell M2000, M2005, K2005, SA2000, SA2005, SFI 31.2A or 41.2A helmet mandatory; shield permitted (goggles prohibited)

All times listed are 1/4 mile.

Laugh...since you are up in the Central Valley I recommend you go with the NHRA rules since the tracks you would most likely be racing on are NHRA's track and will follow their guidelines as HisPony stated above. If you are going to get a helmet, get one with SNELL approve, better to spend the extra bucks then find out you can't run with just a DOT approve helmet and end up spending an extra hundred for another helmet.

Here in San Diego, RaceLegal check the SNELL approve sticker. At Barona, they had me peeled off the inner padding to check for the SNELL sticker the first time I raced there. But it looks like after you run there a few times and they recognize you, they just make sure you have a helmet and assume its the same one that's been approved before.

One other thing about helmets, leave the thing on until you exit the track and are on the return road!!

Some tracks will give you an early exit because this is a Safety Violation!!

The Q has checked for my sticker every time I have raced there. Barona has never even asked to see my helmet. Probably cause they know my car is way slow.......

Paul,

Sorry if my post came across as sarcastic!

I was saying thanks for recommending that people wear a helmet even if it is not required.

I was going to make a smart ass comment, but I really don't need to get on anybody's hit list or anything.
