Intake, which to get

Hi all, I am upgrading/rebuilding my engine... I am putting on some GT40 heads, having a basic rebuild, etc... I am kinda new to this so any help would be appreciated highly. Coming from the import scene, I dont know much about the 302, but would like to learn =D. Anyhow, my question is.... I am looking to get up around the 300+ range, So far I have exhaust, air filter, gt40 heads and I am wondering what kind of intake should I get. I am debating over the cobra gt40 intake or a explorer gt40 intake (not sure the differences) and maybe a edlebrock performer intake. How much of a difference will either of those be? and which is better? I am hoping to get my mustang in the high 12's in the 1/4 someday.... thats about it, nothing to drastic. Thanks!!!

IMO the best intake out is the Holley System Max

the only difference between the cobra and the explorer is the cobra's upper flows a little better. i personally have a explorer and i like it because it looks almost stock. 90stripes has a cobra and we put down identical power numbers, so i think they are about even. the systemax is a great intake, but it is expensive. i only payed $100 for my intake....thats cheaper than anything out there. think about that before you choose. also, instead of the edelbrock look at the typhoon, thye are they same. but the typhoon is cheaper

Let us be truthful about the entire matter. All of these intakes, to include the GT40 tubular that I run have about the same flow capacity...especially for 300HP. I all comes down to how much money you want to throw down and what look you prefer. The Systemax and Trickflow are rated the best and provide a triangular, space age look. The Cobra and Explorer intake look more original and have plenty of flow for a 331 and 347 application. The GT40 tubular is also expensive, and the flow rating is good for 331 and 347. To look at the numbers from a reliable source go here: http://www.musclemustangfastfords.com/tech/173_0101_super/index.html

EDELBROCK victor 5.0 rated NR 1 in the test. Just keep in mind. To take advantage of an expensive intake you have to increase cubic inches and then rev the **** out of them.

and keep in mind that it is really hard to hit 300hp on a 302 without a power adder.

what are you saying :bs::nonono::nonono: you can achieve over 300 hp without a poweradder...

You can hit 300 with a 302 with good heads, cam and maybe some added compression.

Glad to see you have turned from the "Darkside" aka the import scene. And NO "The Fast and the Furious" was NOT real....... and Welcome to the Mustang scene.

300 HP is achievable with the right combonation of parts. The heads you have will be your limiting factor. Match your intake to your heads to make the most power for your particular engine. Keep in m ind if you go with a Holley or Performer RPM. You will lose Tq, but gain HP on the top end. For everyday driving I would want more Tq. (quicker of the line) With those heads you can't go wrong with a cobra intake. If you are serious about 300hp on motor you will have to port those heads and get a matching custom camshaft. It can be done, but will take the right combo.

Remember it is not always the best parts that make the most power, but the best combo of parts that match and compliment each other that will make the most.

Thanks! I think I am sold on the Cobra intake. IF I was to get a supercharger, that would push me over 300 right? Honestly my main goal is to get into the low 13's or high 12's in the 1/4 mile. Am I going in the right direction with this? Would I actually need a supercharger? Before I turned from the darkside, I had a 1997 GSX and was running low 14's in the quarter with only a big 16G turbo, exhaust, filter.... nothing major like I am trying to do now.

12's...thats easy. the 5.0's love spray. honestly, you got the heads right, get the intake and a matching cam, all the usual bolt ons, and some good gears. i have 4.10's and on the track they are great, but a little agressive for my taste on the street. but throw a 150 shot on it and you will be easily into the 12's.

For sure you will make over 300 hp with supercharger, and btw the only cam i think you can switch to in california is the Ford racing 'E' cam. I think they're in the 300 dollar range with the intake you'll make lots of good power N/A and then add a blower looking at 400 possibly or even more.

We had a member name Juan De Leon with a stock 302 block, with ported and polished E7TE heads no cam, MAC Shorty Headers, GT 40 intake upper and lower ported and polished.. Who made more than 300hp and ran 12.7 all day long in a Silver 93 LX at Carlsbad Raceway...:bd: Ofcourse with Drag Suspension..

The E cam is the only "FORD" cam you can add legally to the 302. There are better smog legal cams out there...just ask Emilio, he knows the secrets.
