Which Ones Put Performance in Your Pocket?
You already know you can listen to your iPod in your car. But did you know that your iPod can also listen to your car? Thanks to some hot apps for the iPod Touch and iPhone models, you can get useful information on how you’re running without opening the hood.

Application: Dynolicious
By: BunsenTech, LLC
Cost: $12.99 (iTunes)
Website: www.dynolicious.com

Features:
• 0-60 mph acceleration timer
• Quarter mile elapsed timer

• Lateral G-force readings

According to the programmer, Dynolicious was track-tested against regulation timing equipment and provides user accuracy that’s comparable to standalone units costing hundreds of dollars. We like the program’s ability to save test results and gauge performance and compare against engine mods. This was the most expensive app we could find but despite the price, it scored really well with reviewers.

According to the developer, CarTrack is an app made by a community of car enthusiasts with a full-feature offering that rivals some of the leading dyno apps. Application: G Force
By: Cross Discipline Technology
Cost: $2.99
Website: www.oodot.com
Average Review: * * * (Based on 7 Reviews)
Features:
• Quick and simple calibration
• Real-time display
• Peak hold
• Adjustable audio alert
• Adjustable gauge scale
• Session max records
• Large operation buttons

According to the developer, as the name implies, this app gives your vehicle a handy G-Force meter. We like the features like the large buttons and audio alerts that allow drivers to keep their eyes on the road during runs – making it a great buddy app even with one of the more detailed dyno programs. Plain and simple, this is a fun little app for three bucks.

Overall:
The right app for you depends a lot on how you want to use it. All have handy measuring features but the key seems to be in easy calibration and set up. After all, if you can’t get the thing working right – and judging by the reviews some can’t – it’s worthless.

Our advice? Read the reviews, hit the developer websites and email them if you have questions. Try the free versions where available. Understand how to run the app before you get into the car. Find an empty stretch of road and if possible, have a co-pilot to monitor the app as you drive. And don’t forget to secure your iPod when testing because they can literally fly out the window if you keep them on the dash. Or so we’ve heard anyway.
