X GAMES gold medallist Jeremy Lusk, an American freestyle motocross racer, has died of head injuries caused when he crashed while trying to land a backflip in competition.

Lusk, 24, was injured in Costa Rica on Saturday when he failed to complete a full rotation while attempting a Hart Attack backflip and slammed headfirst into the dirt.

Jorge Ramirez, chief of the intensive care unit at Calderon Hospital where Lusk was put into a medicine-induced coma, said the motocross racer suffered severe brain damage and a possible spinal cord injury.

Lusk crashed in almost identical fashion in the freestyle semifinals at the 2007 X Games but was not hurt.

He had a successful 2008 season, winning freestyle gold at the X Games and silver in best trick when he landed the first double-grab Hart Attack backflip.

He won a bronze helmet in freestyle at the Moto X World Championships in his hometown of San Diego.

Ramirez said Lusk died with his parents and his wife, Lauren, at his side.

Lusk lived in Temecula, California.

I remember when all you had to do was take off and land a high/long jump!!!! Now there is more and more pressure on them to do these crazy jumps just to even get a score!!!! Kind of sucks for them!!!!!!

Saw the video. The strange part is that he had the same exact crash one month ago and he walked away. He landed exactly the same and suffered no injuries. I guess he went to the well one to many times.

If you have to die, leave this world doing something that you love.

Just saw the video. Those medics there sure don't look like they know how to handle a head and neck injury. What they do, yank his helmet off? Yeah, that's a good way to help a neck injury. Where's the back board? Wonder if they even put a neck brace on him (I doubt it).

Prayer for his family.

alls its got to take is one person to look at the wrong way and a lawsuit will be all over this about how he should have been handled

They carried him off on the spine board, and did have his head immobilized, but they did not throw a C spin collar on him, which is pretty stupid. And you are supposed to remove the helmet off a motorcycle trauma otherwise you are unable to be sure there's an open airway.

Lmao, yes, I have been :) I got an 88 on my midterm! Only 2 more weeks until the class is over and I can do my NREMT written. Which reminds me, I need to get an appointment for the doctor for my physical for the ambulance license :D

This is all lots of fun though :D
