There are many ideas and subjects today that we might view as extreme. With a complicated and fast paced political uprising, a drastically evolving world of viruses and disease, to a talented slew of people in the entertainment industry. The term “extreme” may very well be perceived differently from one person to the next. With all of what people view as extreme it’s easy to overlook the simple things in life. Those same simple things or ideas… may just be the most extreme in sheeps clothing.
The folks at Saleen Automotive seem to be in tune with todays extremities and have taken every taste, smell, sound and feeling of extreme and combined it all to build the most extreme Mustang to ever*prowl the streets of America. Holding it’s head high, the new for 2008 Saleen S302E is without a doubt the most extreme Mustang these guys have ever brewed up in their mad scientist labs.
Packing a devistating punch, the new S302 is powered by the very same Saleen built engine that motivates the Parnelli Jones machine, but with a twist… literally. The 302ci 3-valve engine with numerous modifcations, was reconfigured to work with a very efficient best-in-class, Saleen patented intercooled twin screw supercharger. To keep the engine breathing and content, the cylinder heads underwent a 5 axis CNC port and vavle job. High flow fuel injectors complimented by a high performance fuel system keeps the thursty beast flooded with fresh fuel. A forged crankshaft, connecting rods and pistons bring new meaning to the term “bullet proof.” All this wonderful combination of precisely designed parts, helps to create an eye blurring 620bhp, with a neck-snapping 600lb-ft of torque. “We believe that we are in the process of creating a legendary new car. It’s thrilling” says Saleen President and CEO, Paul Wilbur. “It seemed to make sense that as we go into our 25th Anniversary as a manufacturer in North America that we make our best and most powerful car yet.”
All that menacing power is transferred through a short-throw, six-speed manual transmission and Max-Grip rearend. Mash the pedal to the floor in the S302E, and things will happen in a hurry. With a 0-60 in just under 4.0 seconds, and the ability to clean the 1/4-mile in just under 12 seconds… this Saleen redefines what it means to be extreme.
To get that kind of incredible performance, the folks at Saleen had to get it down to the pavement. This is accomplished with a set of standard 20 inch, 5-spoke forged aluminum alloy wheels that are wrapped in high performance Pirelli P-Zero “Rosso” tires. Proper handling and control means nothing without a dedicated suspension, and Saleen engineers never cut corners. With Saleen Racecraft suspension on all 4 corners and an all new, second generation Watts Link system, this Saleen can carve canyon roads with the best of the best. The chassis system is then further complimented with 4 wheel disc brakes with ABS traction control. 15 inch vented and slotted rotors, with 6 piston calipers reside on the front, along with 11.8 inch rotors and single piston calipers on the rear do their best to bring this Saleen to a hault in tricky situations.
“This was an interesting challenge for me. Everything I learned from the past on the S7 race team was put into play for this year’s production models. The result is one that I am sure that the market is going to love,” says Chassis and Dynamics Team Lead, Derk Hartland.
Saleen has always been about exclusivity, so its no wonder that production of the S302E is limited to a mere 100 units for 2008. Retailing at $79,995 the S302 is no walk in the park in terms of expense. But, with its performance and handling, intimidating appearance… its a reasonable price to pay… to be… The Most Extreme!
