Dirty Intake Manifold Runner Controls (IMRCs) are the used ’96–’98 Cobra’s cross to bear. The butterfly valve over the primary port gets gummed up with oily, carbon residue. If you don’t know when your IMRC plates have last been cleaned, assume they need it.

You can either find some delete plates for sale in classifieds on other forums, or remove your plates and modify them yourself. It requires removing the butterflies and rod, then filling the holes with some sort of epoxy (JB Weld) and smoothing it out. The IMRC plates are there to close the secondary ports and increase air velocity to the primary ports under 3250 rpms, which helps torque down low. By removing them, your slowing the air down and your car will loose torque. What your gaining is less restriction in the higher rpms which may give you a little bit of HP. You will definetely need a custom tune, and you will also want a steep gear (4.30's+) to keep you in the higher rpm range.

First pic is hard to see, sorry. But you can see a shiny outline where I scribed the outline of the gasket. And the carbon buildup shows how mis-matched the ports where.

Again, the carbon buil up shows how off the ports were. This was an experiment, but you can see how enlarged the ports were. The IMRC's were deleted and the plates were knife edges to lengthen the transition of 1 intake runner to 2 ports on the head.

Yes the removal is better than repairing.

Roushed2 we found a better looking intake at the junk yard, its from a 1997 Mark VIII the intake looks like the 2001 Cobra Intake and only cost us 40 dollars we are going to try and use it...
