ive been messing with the base timing on my car and i cant get any more than 6 degrees out of it because the distributor hits the intake manifold. ive tried advancing the gear one tooth but it advanced it too far, even when fully retarded. has any one else had this problem? thanks for your help

sounds like the timing chain is out to me i could be wrong what mods do you have 6 is good on 87 but you can go a little more with higher octane as much as 10 correct me if im wrong check the chain i think i have a book on it for that year if you need it

ive got a book too and what ive read is 10 degrees base timing. it had 10 degrees before i took it apart im just having trouble finding it again. it runs good with 6 but i think there might be a few more ponys in there if i can bump the timing a lil more.

i look at the book your right 10 is base 12 is better the higher the octane the higher the number you have to play with it check your timing (chain) first then go from there

When you say "I took it apart" what exactly did you do? Did you remove the spout when you adjusted the timing? Are you using the stock balancer?

im using a brand new ford factory balancer(just put it on today) the problem im having is that the distributor hits the water neck mount on the lower intake so that i cant advance it far enough. i tried puling it out and advancing it one tooth, but that advanced it way too far even when fully retarded.

So you never touched your timing chain? Sound like the distributor could be off a tooth.. Have to bring it by...

Did you take the distributor out? If you did it may be 180 out. @ 10 degrees your tfi module should point to the drivers side, so you are way off if it's hitting the waterneck.

If you had it out, put #1 piston back @ TDC and pop the dizzy cap. If the rotor does not point to the #1 wire you need to pull it and spin it 180 so it points to #1 wire and drop it back in. Let us know.

sounds like the distributor is off to me to. 12 deg is what you want. are you sure your on the #1 wire when your checking the timing?? we had that happen to us once. what i suggest is to bring it by emilios house, or the workign party on sunday. i guarantee it wont take more than 20 minutes to fix. it could also be 180'd out.

make sure its on the #1 wire when your checking the timing!

Was it PFM, or did you find an actual solution to your timing problem??

found an actual solution. i couldnt adavance it far enough so i advanced the plug wires one position and then retarded the rotor one tooth(so it wouldnt over adavence it) and i landed right on the button. 10 degrees exactly and if i want i can adjust up to 14. so it runs like it should now, awsome. thanks for your help
