FORT HOOD, Texas (AP/CBS 8) - At least 12 people were killed and 31 wounded in two shootings Thursday at the Fort Hood Army base in Texas, the Army said. Two suspects were in custody and a third was killed during the shooting, the military said. The suspects were identified as U.S. soldiers.

The first shooting began at about 1:30 p.m. at a personnel and medical processing office, Army spokesman Lt. Col. Nathan Banks said. The facility, called a Soldier Readiness Center, handles administrative details for soldiers.

Lt. Gen. Bob Cone said all 12 of those who were fatally wounded died at the Soldier Readiness Center. He also confirmed the shooters were U.S. soldiers.

"It's a terrible tragedy. It's stunning," Lt. Gen. Cone said.

Banks says the second shooting took place at a theater on the sprawling base.

An Army spokesman said the base was locked down after the shootings.

Covering 339 square miles, Fort Hood is the largest active duty armored post in the United States. Home to about 52,000 troops as of earlier this year, the sprawling base is located halfway between Austin and Waco.

At the Soldier Readiness Center, soldiers who are about to be deployed or who are returning undergo medical screening - on average about 300-400 screened a day, Lampam said.

Lampam said a graduation ceremony for soldiers who finished college courses while deployed was going on in the auditorium at the time of the shooting.

The White House said President Barack Obama was notified of the shootings.

The base is home to nine schools - seven elementary schools and two middle schools - and all were on lockdown, said Killeen school spokesman Todd Martin.

Texas Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Tela Mange said Texas Rangers and state troopers were en route to Fort Hood to help seal the perimeter of the 108,000 acre base.

Fort Hood officially opened on Sept. 18, 1942, and was named in honor of Gen. John Bell Hood. It has been continuously used for armored training and is charged with maintaining readiness for combat missions.

Watching the news now, seems the guy was making comments about how the Muslims had a right to rise up against "the aggressors" and we should get out of Afghanistan and Iraq. He was also a convert to Islam, according to an Interview with a guy named Col, Terry Lee(Ret) who had worked with him and heard these comments personally. This was on Fox news btw.

So even with all the security and stuff to keep people away from our bases, ONE OF OUR OWN did this!!!!!!! What a piece of ****!!!! And yes profiling, stereotyping, whatever the **** you want to call it isnt right..........but how many more of these situations have to happen before we start? How many white kids from West VIrginia have gone crazy on base and killed a bunch of fellow soldiers.....NONE!!!!! That girl was taking it out on the enemy at least. They knew about this guy for 6 F-ing months that he made posts on the internet about suicide bombings and such......UMMMMMMM WTF?????? It is a sad day for all involved, cant even remain safe from the violence even at home. I wish for those that had to go through this to recover quickly and the POS that perpetrated it along with anyone that had anything to do with this burn in hell!!!!!

Did you know the prisoners that we have in Gitmo have received the H1N1 vaccine, while our military members here at home wait for everyone else to get it before we get ours? It is about time the US stops worrying about hurting peoples feelings and all the PC BS and take care of business......

Sorry long rant but am upset that they will probably find some justification as to how it is everyone elses fault that he went crazy and killed people instead of just saying he was committing JIHAD against US Servicemembers!!
