If it broke a rod then it probably caused head damage as well. Well most cases anyways.

worst case: piston was on its way down and chunks of metal met valves and ate the head while the rotating rod slaughtered the cylinder wall.

Best case: Piston was not destroyed but still in the cylinder saving the head, rod broke and exited downward only marring up insignificant parts.

however with out pictures or a description... its some where in between
