2006 Mustang GT - U7140, Failed Emissions Test... Now What?

Also posted at the Missouri Chapter forum... This kind of surprises me, as I have always been told that the tunes were 50-state smog legal. This is what I posted on the Diablo site earlier today:

"Post subject: 2006 Mustang GT - U7140, Failed Emissions Test... Now What? Posted: May 29, 2008 - 10:55 AM

I have a 2006 Mustang GT and a U7140 (v.8r36), and the car just failed emissions testing in Missouri. Other mods include FRPP ceramic shortys, FRPP x-pipe (CATs intact), JBA axle-backs, UDP's, Airaid CAI, Predator Airaid 93 octane tune and 4.56's. Any idea how I can make this thing pass?

Any help would be hugely appreciated.
Thanks,

Jim"

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks,

Jim

Put the stock tune onto it and go back through. The retune after.......would that work?

Do you have Cats? If not that will fail you right there.

Just my .02.

Yeah, I am going to do that as soon as the floor dudes are done tearing the shit out of my house. Yeah, I still have my CATs, too... I am looking into a mileage waiver, as well... then slap an off-road x-pipe on it if I can get the waiver.

Jim, Do you still have your Stock H-Pipe with Cats? And What is the FRPP X-Pipe Cats Intact? Did you cut your cats and have them welded in?

It is an x-pipe that goes between the cats and the intermediate pipes. this is a bolt-on piece that replaces the factory H-pipe, and the cats are still in place.

If the FRPP X pipe goes after the cats I don't see how you failed.. Please explain.. Might only be your tune.

Jim,
Another friend of mine had the same problem. This is what he did.

My 06 has a custom 93 octane and 4:10's tune. I tried to get it inspected and it threw some trouble codes...Went back to the stock tune and drove 50 miles to reset the computer..Re-inspection passed... Went home and set the car back to Custom tune.

After looking at your report, you have exactly the same problem I am having right not. Not sure where you got that code from because it was not listed on the report. It failed because catalyst system was NOT READY.
Did you mess with the tune at all recently, within the last week or so??

E,

This is the the way my exhaust looks now, except it has the FRPP x-pipe shown below.

Another guy had the same problem...
In my inspection report, it noted that the Catalyst system was NOT READY. Apparently my tune requires the down stream o2 sensors be turned off. My tuner suggested I put the car back to the stock tune and drive it about 50 miles to reset the computer. I did so and went directly back to the inspection shop. The dam thing passed with flying colors. Before leaving the inspection facility, I plugged in my tuner and reinstalled the custom tune. Have had no issues since. I will go the same route next time...

That makes total sense to me, Emilio... my report said 'Readiness Result: Fail - Catalyitic Converter: Unsupported, Secondary Air: Unsupported.' The O2 sensors are located in the CATs themselves.

Thanks again for all your homework.

Thanks guys... I'll keep ya posted. I just applied for the Missouri Mileage-Based Emissions Exemption, so I'll post when I get something back.

Jim

PS If I can't get it exempted or get it to pass, there may be a really nice for sale soon... LOL

Jim here is more info for you...
I'm not sure about the "Unsupported" categories but the one he really needs to look at is the Readiness test, that is the only one that says FAILED. The readiness test involves many startups and different driving conditions. It ensures you don't simply disconnect the battery before going to the emissions station to clear a MIL.

If he is going to flash in a new tune and drive over there, he will have the exact same problem. After you flash the ECU you have to go through the readiness test also. The inspection station should explain to him the vehicle was not ready to be tested and give him a paper to come back. He should not be charged for both visits. I haven't seen a list of the steps to get through the readiness test on the S197 yet but if you had that list you could perform those things and get through the process quicker. Usually the inspection station will just tell you your car isn't ready and you just need to drive it around for a couple weeks and come back. -Joe
