With the Mustang’s 2009 facelift, Ford has shown itself loaded for bear in an increasingly crowded market. And even though the buff books say the standard GT is capable of fending off all Challengers in tests (and Camaros too—pun intended), heavy-footed folks also have been taken care of in the form of the GT with the Track Pack, the Shelby GT-500 and now the Shelby Super Snake.
Named after the fabled 1967 Shelby GT500 that was stuffed with Ford’s 427 with 425 gross horsepower in lieu of the usual 428 Police Interceptor, the new-for-2010 Super Snake has more horsepower thanks to a supercharged 5.4 liter. Those 750 horses under the Super Snake-specific wide mouth hood are married to handling prowess not often found in such a brutish automobile, live rear axle or otherwise. In contrast, the next Mustang down on the totem pole (Shelby GT-500) has over 200 horsepower less.
Of course, the Super Snake comes equipped with a 6-speed manual, Ford Racing suspension with dynamic adjustable dampers, and Pirelli P-Zeros (among other items) that do little to keep rubber from being left on the tarmac. If all this sounds like a dream come true for Blue Oval fans, you better make sure your dream isn’t diminished by the cabin noise.
