A Marine's Sailor son

I posted this in the Marines section but I though I'd share this with all you Navy types too.

Last week - I got to enjoy the company of my sailor son Craig who finished school in Great Lakes & came home for a visit, before he shipped out to Norfolk. His orders and his new home away from home are for the USS Nassau LHA4.

Pictured with my son & me are my younger daughters L-R Jordan (6) & Julia (9).

Funny part is he said he didn’t think the Marine Corps was for him (I agreed BTW) so at first he wanted to go in the Air Force like his big sister did (USAF 14yrs) but changed his mind a few dead-end jobs later he thought about becoming a Coastie then changed his mind again after they kept giving him the runaround so the only recruiters that gave him a straight answer was the Navy.

Anyway all that effort to stay away from “his dad’s branch of the military” and out of all the possibilities as an Electricians Mate for assignments he ends up in the Gator Navy working as part of the Marine NAVY Team.

So while the Marine Corps gets the last laugh – I’m still proud of my son!

Congrats on your son's achievement and to you to raise a fine son. Good luck to him in his Navy career and future endeavors. Let us know if we can help him with anything. We have a few members in Norfolk area.

Nice! Congrats! My dad was a 2 tour in NAM special forces but I also went Navy. Not before spending nearly 2 years Army as an 11B M60 gunner. Tell him to start his TSP savings up and to stick with it. They say 10% is a good investment. That is unless..he has a better retirement plan. -Shane

Anyway pictured are L-R The Jarhead Dad (me), My older daughter Amy (USAF - 4 mos pregnant with my second grand child), The Sailor himself (newest member of the Marine Navy team, the Sailor's Girlfriend and my second youngest Julia (9yrs).

It's good to see the Family tradition of military service being carried on that gone unbroken dating back to before the American Civil War.

Ah....good old Great Lakes. My induction into the military in June 1987. Hottest and most humid I ever experienced.

Lol. Yeah most of the Swabbie friends in here are great people!

Who you calling swabbie?

I'll take bubble head tho :proud:

I don't think I could ever make it in the Marines... I'm too laid back... I mean, I'm serious when the time comes for it but...

Yes well as a Jarhead I've spent a heck of a lot of time at Sea on LPHs but never ventured far enough south to get my "Shellback" Status. Mostly Med cruises with one NATO and one Caribbean.

In fact my son should be about to return from his first training cruise - Nassau should be back or returning to Norfolk soon. Can't wait to see if my Swabby son did any better than the time I took him fishing off the coast a could years ago. I swear the boy was green for most of the trip. ;)

East coast guys rarely if ever cross the line... Nassau is a good ship he should do well. I've done DDG's, CVN's, PC's and amphibs. I must say that I prefer the Gator Navy.

Son just returned from his first underway training mission - said the first 24 hours where the worst because he was up for 20 hrs or so. Said he spent most of his time running around showing folks how to turn on light switches.

Said they had some flight ops & got to see a few Helo & Harrier practice landings – but none of the birds stayed – just enough time to refuel and take off again. Sounds like units out of Cherry Point & New River doing carrier qualifications. But then I’ve been out for a while.

Anyway - other than that he said it was great week or so at sea – said the commander gave everybody an attaboy and was impressed with the performance of the crew.

I still think its kind’a funny he’s on a ship that is older than he is and actually entered service when I was in the Corps. Hell the Nassau's keel was actually laid while I was in Jr. High School for crips sake. ;)

Tell him to get hot on his DC quals and warfare pins... Top priority to advance.
What's that?

Son told me that "electricians’ mates" is a hard field to advance in. I’m guessing that like Huey Mechs in the Marine Corps - they’re probably a dime a dozen (saturated career field) with lots of competition.
