warfare pin, its pretty much a must now to be promoted. your son will know. Surface Warfare basically make you learn about all the different systems of the ships, operations, engineering (which he is), communication, fire control systems, logistice, etc.
Since he's on a gator with an Air Dept, its good to take advantage and earn an air warfare pin also. This is where he learn about the air operations side of the navy.
I believe the process is he goes to each dept, ask questions and have sections sign off. Once the sign off is complete he can request for a board and a board will convene and test him. If he passes, he will be qualify to wear the different warfare pins. Someone correct me if I'm wrong on this account. It has been awhile for me since I was active duty.
Having duel warfare qual would be an advantage and additional points for him when he take his advancement tests.
