We have autocross over here like once or twice a year at the bmw plant in duncan. Its like 20 min from my house. Its a lot smaller scale than that to keep speed down. BUt its still timed.

i used to do it at qualcomm stadium and is a blast when having full slicks !!

I'm thinking about driving my car back to the states just to get back to the old days, but it's not as easy as it sounds as I would have to drive 1500 miles north

i remember seeing that vid back in the day, everyone was in awe of his exhaust note, i would love to get involved in autocross one day.

It's a blast with any (safe) tires, just faster with "slicks". One of last year's SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) national champions was a Mustanger, and I think he's done it more than once.

Even without a chance of winning a class, it's worth it to teach yourself what your car will do when you ask it to - and what it won't do, no matter how much you wish it would!

The local groups are eager to see new autocrossers, and make it as easy as they can to get started. They are helpful and generous with technical and driving tips.

The best deals are practices - many, many more runs per event than the three or four at championships - but you have to be alert for the on-line entry blanks and sign up by mail, as the reason everyone gets many runs is the number of drivers is restricted to 80 or a hundred.

Qualcomm is much better than many places you might have seen, since it is so large. I've run courses that the fast time was thirty or forty seconds. The last practice I went to was a minute and a half a lap, and I made a dozen.

For championship events, you show up early, sign up for SCCA and a local Solo card/number, get teched for safety, pick your group and walk the course.

Classes aren't important the first few times you are out there, and from what I've seen of Stangs in WickedStangs, most are probably in some modified class. You can elect to run "time only", just to reduce the confusion, but still need to select a class for run-schedule purposes.

You'll be expected to work while one other group runs. That may involve chasing displaced cones, running a pre-grid line, handing out time slips, collecting signatures on waiver forms, or any of the other jobs that must be done to put on an autocross.

According to recent posts, a couple of San Diego autocrossers covered themselves in glory at California Speedway last weekend.


My view, the only things better (to do with your Mustang) than autocross is high-speed time trials/track days, and full-on wheel-to-wheel racing, all a good deal more expensive than autocross, and not nearly as accessible.
