Barona 6-27-09 Popped my cherry

Well I finally lost my drag racing virginity Saturday night. Sure glad it I didn't wait this long in other aspects even though it last about as long.... Anyway it was a night of ups and downs. I did 6 passes with 2 being full decent runs and 4 miserable failures. It was fun but here's the run down of my night. Oh and I am not going to post up my bad times so don't even ask.

1st Run: Failing to do a decent burnout. I was so nervous I didn't want to even try to burn out again. tried to launch at 4500 and the car bogged real bad. Figured what the hell and drove it hard to the finish.

2nd Run: Did a real burnout and stalled the car on accident. Tried to launch around 5500-6000 was watching the tree and not tach. Figured I'd fix my bogging problem with more rpm's. Didn't work. The car just flat died when I tried to launch. Started the car back up and just coasted down the track. Thought I broke something.

I made some phone calls and asked around what might be wrong during the break and then said F*** It I'm going out again.

3rd Run: Did a good burnout. Launched at 4000. Spun the tires way too much and actually made a full hard run. Reaction: .541 60ft: 2.162 MPH: 85.608 E.T. : 8.578

4th Run: Same as before but I tried to shift while still spinning and it would not go into 2nd resulting in some grinding. Just finished the run slowly since it wasn't worth it.

5th Run: Same as 3rd. Reaction: .705 60ft: 2.172 MPH: 85.964 ET: 8.595

6th Run: Same as 4th but alot more grinding. :nonono: The car does not shift if its spinning. Not sure if its too many RPM's or what. I really need a good tach.

All said and done it was a fun night with those that showed and I'll be going back next time and hopefully leave with a better time at the end of the night. Should be easy with last nights experiance and a better intake which should be going on the car this weekend. As of today though personal best 8.578 at 85 mph. I think I did ok for being out there for my first time.

Next time I think I'm going to lower the rear of the car a inch or two and try launching at 3500 or maybe even 3000 to see if it hooks up better. That and go down to 10psi instead of the 12 I was running.

Oh and I just wanted to say thanks to all that were there. Ya'll made the night much more fun than it would've been. Especially with all the bad runs.

Good job and Quite honestly a good shift light would be way better than a tach. Just my oppinion. I never look at my tach while racing. I just go off of feel. I am thinking about getting a raptor though.

Danny was a trooper that night! Nice meeting you and that car is looking sweet!

Always a treat to see a carbed 4-eyed fox, and with that 347 :adore:

oh, well, i was gonna ask whats in it...but he just said...347. nice man. those are good times. the stock tachs are way off, you could go with a light like james said. i personally like my tach....even though i dont look at it when im running either, i like to see what the engine is actually at.

you had about the same problem as me. what kind of tires were you running on. i was launching at 4k and it almost died every time as well, i ended up slipping the clutch to keep the revs up high.

that 8.5 light is no easy task, imagine if you cut a 1.9 or 1.8 60'.... good job...

Good job man! Your car has more in it with some seat time. We could all use a little more seat time. :)

Is it possible that your car is too rich and that's what was killing you on the launch??

Beejay I'm running the Nitto drag radials.

Oh and the more I've been replaying the night in my head I almost think the car dying was driver error. I can't explain it any other way. Its never done it on the street and it didn't do it the last 4 runs. I can't believe I could've I let up but I just can't explain it any other way. My father actually kinda convinced me this is what happened. Ya the car is way too rich and if it loaded up it could've flooded the motor but it should've done that on the last 4 runs if that was the case along with doing it every day I drive it. Its sad to say but I think the butterflies got the best of me on my first 2 runs.

Ya my friends tease me about how they get high just riding in the car. Its really really bad at idle. Guess I am so used to it I don't even notice the smell.

That will kill your times and your car off the line. You can't compare the street to Barona. If you walk on the track at Barona your feet will stick to the ground. :)

Nice runs Daniboy. I hope to be in the low 8s when I return next month. I cut my teeth at Qualcomm and then learned to drive at Barona, but still ran 9.0. Barona is a very sticky track and with the right tires at the right pressure, you'll be flying. Cant wait to get back and race with you. Great Job!!!

You had some good runs in there. If you were nervous, it sure didn't show.

I get that way. Mostly on the first run. Don't know why, I have raced 100's of time before. Oddly enough, it always ends up being my best run for some reason. Maybe because I am so wound up.

With the right setup, I think you got a high 7 sec car for sure.

It was nice to meet you there. And it was fun running with you.

Thanks guys but it just bothers me that my driving isn't up to par.

It was your first time out. Don't be so hard on yourself. It just take some track time. Hell, I've been down the track a few times and I still have much learning and practice to go. Just take some time.

You have a great time for your first run. So just go with that as a start and use it as a foundation to build from.
