Sales figures for the month are beginning to trickle in today, and General Motors says it shifted 9,320 Camaro units last month, as compared to the Blue Oval's 7,632 Mustangs.

Whether Chevrolet's victory will be sustainable over the long haul remains to be seen, but as The General has a backlog of 10,000 sold orders to fill (equating to less than a seven day supply), the streak is likely to continue for at least the next few months. Presently, GM offers just two main Camaro models, the V6 RS and the V8-powered SS, while the Ford Mustang has more bodystyles and trims than you can shake a stick at (arguably making the Camaro's achievement seemingly that much more impressive).

Sales of the third leg of 2009's pony car table, the Dodge Challenger, trail far behind, with just 1,369 units cleared last month.

As the industry heads into the dog days of summer, it looks like America's renewed pony car war is just heating up. Who will take the crown for the whole year? "As the industry heads into the dog days of summer, it looks like America's renewed pony car war is just heating up. Who will take the crown for the whole year? Sit tight, muscle fans."

Do we really need to ask who will take the crown? I think we already know........

Can the new Camaro say this:

2005 Mustang is Hottest Selling Car in the US
Author: 2005 Mustang (more...)

FORD TO INCREASE MUSTANG PRODUCTION TO MEET RUNAWAY CONSUMER DEMAND

* Ford will increase Mustang production to 192,000 in 2005 – 80,000
more than in 2004

* 2005 Mustang is the hottest-selling car in the industry

* Nearly one out of every two sports cars sold in U.S. is a Mustang

DEARBORN, Mich., March 17, 2005 – What’s an auto company to do when
demand for a hot model exceeds supply? Give the customers what they
want.

Ford today announced that it will take production of the hot new
Mustang to more than 192,000 units in 2005 – an increase of more than
70 percent, or 80,000 units, from the previous year.

"Ford Mustang is the hottest car in the industry, and its performance
on the street and in the showrooms is beating everyone’s
expectations," says Steve Lyons, Ford Division president. "Sales are
up more than 45 percent over last year, and V-8 GT and convertible
model demand is so strong that we haven’t been able to build enough.

We’re planning to increase production well beyond what was initially
planned. This will allow us to sell 160,000 – 165,000 Mustangs in the
U.S. this year."

Sales and Share Gains

Since its launch in the fall of 2004, the new model Mustang has been
an instant sensation with new car buyers. Sales of the 2005 model,
coupled with the sell-down of the prior model, have sent overall
Mustang sales to record levels every month since launch.

The higher-end Mustang GT V-8 models are in short supply, and the
much anticipated new convertible model is just beginning to arrive at
dealerships in time for spring. Traditionally, May and June are the
hottest selling months for convertible models.

In the key U.S. market, overall Mustang sales are up more than 45
percent on a retail basis over last year, a feat accomplished without
the support of the convertible model, which traditionally accounts
for one-third of overall Mustang volume. Based on the current sales
trajectory, Ford expects to sell about 160,000 – 165,000 Mustangs in
the U.S. for the 2005 calendar year. In Canada, where Mustang was
named 2005 Canadian Car of the Year, sales continue their triple-
digit month-after-month rise, topping records set more than a decade
ago.

Increasing sales gains have also been accompanied by share gains.
Since the 2005 launch, Mustang has garnered 44 percent of the small
specialty segment, featuring sports coupes such as the Pontiac GTO,
Nissan 350Z, Chrysler Sebring and Hyundai Tiburon among others.

Historical Anecdotes

Red-hot sales and resulting production increases of a new Mustang are
not unprecedented. When Mustang was first introduced in April 1964,
Ford had only expected to sell 100,000 the first year. But dealers
took 22,000 orders the first day. Ford shifted production mid-year
and Mustang went on to sell 618,812.

Mustang fever spread from showrooms to car-hops and Mustang legend
spread through barbershops, diners and service stations on "Main
Street USA" as Mustang became a part of Americana:

A Ford dealer in Chicago locked the doors of Mustangs in his showroom
because he feared for the safety of people trying to crowd into them.

In Garland, Texas, 15 customers bid on the same car and the
successful bidder insisted on sleeping overnight in the car until his
check cleared the bank in the morning.

In Pittsburgh, a restaurant advertised "Our hotcakes sell like
Mustangs."

Parents purchased 93,000 Mustang toy pedal cars during the 1964
Christmas season at a price of $12.95. Today, restored Mustang pedal
cars are extremely popular with collectors and some sell for more
than $1,000, nearly 100 times the original price.

Nearly 500 Mustang clubs formed in the first two-and-a-half years of
the car’s production.

More than 8 million Mustangs have been sold in the 41 years since its
introduction. The 1 millionth Mustang was sold by March 1966.

there's a reason why the camaro was discontinued... it's staying power. something the mustang will always have. there've been countless other muscle cars to enter the "muscle car" wars but in the end, it was our mustangs which came out on top.

of course demand for the camaro right now is high. it's the first time in years it's been produced. and it was supposed to have been out four or five years ago. we'll see five years down the road again whether the camaro is still selling the way it is. i'm thinking the mustang will.

p.s.

tonight's the monthly meeting, you going?

Sad part is the Mustang GT isnt even in the same league as the Camaro SS. The SS even took out the Challenger in reviews. It's the new kid on the block..again and with that alone it will sell great but the car is actually a piece of work. -Shane

It is nice... But, like the Challenger, it is way to BIG! I have seen alot of bad reviews on the Camaro as well. The only things they can find to complian about the mustang is the interior and the lack of IRS.....

Actually they are complimenting the interior on the 2010. They mark down on the power of the GT, but rave about everything else about the 2010. With Camaro, they pretty much gave it a thumb down in everything in all the reviews that comes out.

Yeah, the int in the 2010 is definitely a step up from the S197 style. But when you talk about power you have to take the best Camaro ( the SS ) against the best production mustang ( the GT500 ) I think the GT500's 540hp is plenty enough to put Camaro back in its place.

Dont get me wrong, I dont hate Camaros, Just love Mustang!! As far as muscle car wars go, the more the merrier!! Bring it on Chevy and Dodge!!!!

Is that 425 Gerbils or white mice?? (CHUMPS!!)
Once they can produce a 4.6 v8 or something close to that, in a car that can match or better the Mustang's standard 4.6 v8....then I'll consider it a worthy competitor.
Till then, it's GM as usual, Put in a bigger engine with more power and say, "see, we out did them"!!

Put the camaro SS against a GT500 and let's see who..is...better!

LIES!!! Haha!

That article fails to point out the obvious. What GM is reporting as "sales" are actually what they shipped to the dealers. Thats what I think.

Think about it..... The dealers currently have ZERO Camaro's on their lots, Ford has all their dealers already stocked with Mustangs because the 2010 has been shipping for several weeks and they have to clear out the 2009's. Those sales are not actually people buying the cars, unless I didn't read it right.

The numbers are totally messed up.

There is a pent up demand for the cars I would agree, so I see this trend continuing for a couple months. No doubt the Camaro is going to out sell the the Challenger. But by about Sept, Mustang will be whooping some GM butt like they always have.

Wow..... My Shelby needs to feed, so more Camaro's means more food supply. Should be fun beating up on the clueless Camaro newbs who think they have an all mighty SS!

Ford already has the Crown! I think we killed the last Camaro by beating over the head with Crown didn't we?

those cars will not be driven the will be put in a garage and in 10 years or so they will be sold because GM will be no more
