Cracked!

Fighting Sailor

San Angelo TX
Heading home down the 15, at least a qaurter mile behind a dump truck (w/ 2 cars ahead and between) and I got hit by not one but two rocks! Now I have 2 deep hits and a 12 inch long crack. I got a guy to drill it so it doesn't grow anymore and have an appointment Friday afternoon to get the entire window replaced (friday cause I insisted on an original ford windshield).
I am all twisted up over this. If I was right on the trucks a$$ I would have got what I deserved. However, I was way back! Even worse, the ricer that zoomed ahead and cut off the car ahead of me (right on his a$$) probably came away clean! $375 later my baby will be good as new, but that is $375 that was going to go into mods for my car! I'm still getting my headers next week but the engine dress up kit I was going to buy from Shelby will have to wait....

you dont get a free windshield for having full coverage? I know we do here in sc. Get one free a year if anything ever happens to it for any reason.

Did the truck have Mud flaps? I was watching people's court and the guy followed the truck to his place of business and told him what happened. He took pics of the truck and went to people's court and turns out he won the flaps the truck had was not the right size. And he won his case and a new windshield.:)

Roushed 2 is right. You wont have to give them a plate number either. If you give them the area you were in and the type of truck, they'll pay up. I had the windshield on my Ford Explorer paid for by Cal Trans.

Comprehensive insurance covers that. Depending on the circumstance, meybe even have the deductible waived. Emilio is right about the mudflaps. Federal DOT laws require proper mudflaps. If any are too small or missing, you win.

Caltrans paying??? It doesn't seem right if it wasn't a Caltrans truck.

California State law states that if it's not clear and clean water, ANYTHING the truck drops on the highway is gorunds for voilation, especially aggregate.

I wouldn't feel right calling caltrans, I know it wasn't them. I couldn't live with it. I should've followed the truck but a cursery inspection didn't show me any damage. I found the crack the next day.

My insurance won't waive the deductable and I have opted not to claim it as I don't want to risk raising my rate.
You are the third cracked windsheild (aside from mine) I have heard of this week! seems to be an epidemic! The truck that got me had splits down the edges of the hopper and was spewing crap. The ricer that cut in behind it in such an assinine way could not have been in a very enviable position....
While researching a repair shop I was surprised to see that most wanted to install a cheaper plain glass windshield and never mentioned Ford glass unless I insisted, they all had the same response "that will be more expensive".
I guess most people want the cheap alternative....
It's a bummer to have to pay anything... but, it is worth $375 to have the right stuff.

Sorry to hear this, Sailor... I dealt with it many years ago when a dump truck pulling a backhoe cut me off going over a bridge that had just been chip sealed. Sprayed my entire car with gravel, cracking the windshield and chipping the hell out of the entire front half of the car... it was three weeks old. I followed the truck long enough to get a plate number and the company name, then drove straight to the St. Louis County cop shoppe. The cop told me that "I couldn't prove criminal intent," and refused to file a report. I called the paving company that owned the truck, and the guy that I talked to said, and I quote; "Get bent." I was devasted. I feel your pain.

That could be another place for VP and Mav to blow-up.

Just like in a retail environment, when the seller sells generic, they make a larger profit margin. The total sale may be more on a FORD product, but thier profit margin must be less than if they sell you a generic. Sometimes they get a "kick-back" from manufacturers or distrubutors for moving certain items.

It's a good thing you insisted on name brand.

So who did you end up using? My crack is growing again, and I want to get it fixed before Friday... Anyone with a recommendation for mobile glass service in San Diego is welcome to chime in here.
