Did my good deed for the day...

One of our Navy cooks goes.."hey you know about cars". His brakes were making a weird noise..see where I'm going with this? So I asked him when the last time it was that the brake pads were changed. He said his parents had them changed about 2 years ago. Asked him what the noise sounded like...he goes....grinding. I was like yeah..time for new brake pads and possibly new rotors as a result of the waiting. Why do people not pay attention to their cars? I mean ..your car talks to you..LISTEN. Personally mine..calls me baby all the time...but thats another story. So he got the rotors and brake pads and after about an hour all was done. I have seen my share of brakes...and I have NEVER seen anyone run a set of brake pads this far. :wtf: So I saved him a couple hundred bucks, taught him how to change brake pads and rotors and what to listen for when it's time to change them showing him the little metal tab. Anyone else had this experience?-Shane

Very cool of you.

Thanks, brakes are so simple it makes me mad when people spend hundreds to have them changed. I always tell people no charge bring it over. Usually takes less than an hour. Had it not been for his rusty rotor that wouldn't come off it would have been 30 minutes. -Shane

A lot of times its not having the right tools, also. But you're right, the car will tell you when something is not right. Ignore it and that problem will multiply 10 folds.

I changed a fuel pump and fuel pressure regulator for a 98 Escort on Thursday, an oil pump for a 99 Explorer on Friday and will be doing front and rear brakes on an 07 Camry on Monday.

All are friends cars that I am not charging money for, all I asked of them was to observe and learn. I'm sure you felt the same way with the Navy cook.

I did get dinner and drinks for the Oil Pump though

I helped a guy on the side of the 8 last week. The rear of his car was sticking into the slow lane, causing a lot of traffic. So I pull over and ask if I could help. He asked me if I could give him a jump and I said sure. I was about 50 feet ahead though, so he decided we could probably just push start him, so I get to pushing, and sure enough, the stupid thing starts up. So that's my good deed for a few months. Sorry for stealing your thread there. I'm glad you could help the guy.

No stealing at all! Nice one..its good to use what we know to benifit others. Another reason why tech days are so much fun!-Shane

You saved them ALOT of money, wouldn't feel bad at all. Besides...you didnt know them, your wife did! If it were a tech day at your house and you did it for some new guy I'm sure you wouldnt have charged him. -Shane
