dyno days at the dyno shop in santee

This is where I usually go and YES, I go early and cool down. Sometimes I put a bag of ice on the supercharger after it's parked. I always let a few people dyno before me so I can cool down as much as possible.

I dynoed there last year when it was over 100 degrees and the humidity was through the roof. My numbers were BAD!

I might go this year to this Dyno Day (they have them every few months) but it depends on the temp and humidity.

They also put a very bad taste in my mouth so I will not be donating any money to them. They might have a different crew there now but I dont know.

What's the octane of premium in Va. Beach and could that have had an impact? They have 93 there and we have 91, right? How far off were your numbers?

I doubt going from 93 to 91 would drop me 100 HP. But like I said it has been over two years since I was there and they might have gotten better. What really set me off was the fact that they told me while tuning my car that my chip was bad making me buy one of theirs, would not allow me to be there while they dynoed my car, and the total amount was considerably higher than quoted.

The last time I dynoed my Lightning there was on a good day (cool temp, low humidity) and it came out 352 HP at the wheels. Considering it's an automatic transmission (all 2nd Generation Lightnings are automatics) and the engine is only rated at 380 at the flywheel, I was happy with 352. Makes me wonder if the engine is underated by Ford for insurance reasons. It surely wasn't my mods...I had none. It was bone stock.

If anything, it dynoed HIGHER than I thought it would.

If you extrapolate this out mathmatically, this is only a loss of 28 HP through the drivetrain and an automatic drivetrain at that. This is odd. Most people consider a loss of 15 -18% through an automatic as inevitable and acceptable. But my run indicated a loss of only 13.5%. While I like that number, it strikes me as inaccurate. Manual trannys lose a lot less.

I'm not sure if the dyno is defective, or the testor himself or what. But the truck has dynoed there twice, both within 4 HP of each reading. Maybe the trans in these trucks is more efficient transferring more HP to the rear wheels, I dunno.

I do know that a "Mustang" dyno is supposed to test cars using real world parameters giving you a more accurate idea of what your car can put down on the street as opposed to lab conditions where everything is just right. (Mustang is a brand, not related to the car at all). I've never dynoed on anything but a Mustang dyno so I have no idea what I would get anywhere else although it would be interesting.

This is probably why I use this shop whenever I dyno. I try to be consistent using the same machine and it's always been the same operator on all the "Dyno Days" I've attended. With variables like temp, humidity, engine temp, heat soak, etc., I can at least remove one of the variables by sticking to the same dyno.

I supposed if I shopped around, JBA, Dynomite and others, I might stumble across a place that dynos me at even more HP than I thought I had, but then, who'd be more accurate and does it really matter?

In the end, for most of us and guys like Phil, it's more important to get our mods all working together correctly and get us from the Christmas Tree to the finish line as fast as possible. Gimme more torque!
