Ford has had a smash hit with its EcoBoost line of engines. The twin turbo V6 option offers 355 horsepower and 355 ft-lbs of torque while providing the fuel economy of a 3.5 liter V6. 30% of Lincoln MKS owners opt for the EcoBoost, while 20% of Taurus owners are checking off the EcoBoost on their SHO models. These beat even Ford’s predictions, and the technology is not only padding their profit margin but drawing young, hip buyers too.
It only makes sense then that Ford would consider expanding the EcoBoost lineup into more of its premium models, including the Shelby GT500, as reported by The Detroit Bureau.
The EcoBoost engines command a price premium of $5,000 to $7,000 and currently are being marketed towards Ford’s upper echelon customers. While a 3.5 liter V6 is the only engine offered right now, Ford plans to expand its lineup to small displacement four cylinder engines as well, eventually offering EcoBoost on most of its vehicles. So could the Shelby be receiving a twin turbo, V8 EcoBoost engine that deliver even more horsepower than the current 540 horsepower GT500?
This is a rumor we have been hearing on and off for some time now, but recently it has become more prevalent. If we look back at the rumors that have been swirling about though, all signs seem to point to yes. For one, Carroll Shelby has been rumored to be working on a 1,000 horsepower, twin turbo Mustang. He also just announced a twin turbo Mustang, called the Shelby Turbo, that makes as much horsepower as its supercharged counterpart. Ford has hedged a big bet on turbochargers, and so far it seems to be paying off. Plus, they have pledged to have a half-million EcoBoost cars in the next few years, no small number. With EcoBoost though, the sky (and psi) is the limit.
