The 2008 model year is bound to have some surprises, especially when it comes to the Ford Mustang. With the help of Carroll Shelby, the Ford GT is coming back, but this time it will be a convertible. It will be available to exclusive buyers in coupe and convertible starting in August. Ford plans on the 2008 Shelby GT*making it big now that it’s got*a new air of excitement to it.
“The birth of the Ford Shelby GT was so well received last year, especially by young enthusiasts, that we brought the car back for the 2008 model year,” said Amy Boylan, President of Shelby Automobiles. The Shelby GT was first built in 2007 to be a retail version of the Hertz Corporation Shelby GT-H Coupe. This highly-prized vehicle was only available in performance white or black. “The enormous response to the Shelby GT-H convertible convinced us to offer a drop top Shelby GT. And we had so many requests for blue that we decided to make it our signature color in 2008.”

For the 2008 model year they are making more options and allowing consumers to choose from Vista Blue with silver LeMans racing stripes and at least two different body styles. The same 320 horsepower (courtesy of Ford’s Performance Power Pack) 3 valve 4.6 liter V8 remains between the strut towers, getting that power back to the 3.55 rear gears is your choice of either a 5 speed*auotmatic or manual transmission.
Ford has chosen the Mid-America Ford Performance and Shelby Meet in Tulsa, Oklahoma to introduce the new Mustang to enthusiasts. “The Shelby GT was engineered for people that put performance first,” said Carroll Shelby. “Working with Ford Racing, we created this Shelby to be an everyday driver that’s tuned for fun at the track. Those who value a well-balanced package will appreciate it. Those who don’t will be left behind staring at its tailpipes.”

Price is expected to remain the same, about $36k MSRP. Only 2100 or so Shelby GT’s are expected to be built (down from last year), with probably 70% of those being convertibles.
