Getting better at this

Well I haven't had any formal training, but my father-in-law is a welder by trade. He is rarely here, so it's hard to pick his brain. He showed me a few things here and there and I've been getting pointers from the welders at work. The bottom line is it takes practice, practice, practice. I'm sure my welding leaves alot to be desired, but it's getting better and the $480 I paid for the welder has already saved me well over that amount.

Anyway, here are a few pics of some of the things that I've recently welded. I welded some plates to block the swing out door bars from swinging in towards the driver. This is a requirement to run @ Irwindale and I believe it's also an NHRA rule, but I'm not 100% sure on that.

I also had to weld these seat belt mounting brackets onto the roll bar. This was also an Irwindale requirement and again, I'm pretty sure it is an NHRA rule as well.

Finally, after installing the transbrake I decided not to chance it with the torque boxes, so I bought the kit for the lowers and installed and welded them up. I am in the process of reinforcing the uppers and pics will follow shortly. The uppers are tricky because they are hard to get to in order to clean all the dirt and grime as well as paint to prep for welding. The cleaner you can get it the better the weld will be. Anyway here are the lower plates welded in. I didn't weld all the way around the plates because I didn't want to weaken the floorboard as the metal is very thin!

orange when welding thin metal you have to do multiple tacks not just one long bead other wis it wil warp the metal then you break out the grinder and start all over again. I am sure that if you look up on youtube or something on the spike tv's musclecar program they give lots of helpful tips, the welds look pretty good though. keep it up

I second the thin metal comment. I weld decent on thicker material but on thin stuff, it looks like crap. Great job and it looks like you are really doing good work.

Thanks guys. NorthernC. Thanks for the tip. I was skipping from corner to corner when welding those plates for the torque boxes, but I guess I should have made shorter passes.

I have not read a single thing on welding. I just bought the welder and gave it a shot. I may be taking a welding course in the next year or so though (gi bill).

Thanks for the compliments men!

My phone stays in the room on sundays and I watch football without interruption  You only call when you need something anyway you TRICK.

Those are great welds. You might want to go up a notch on the heat to get little deeper penetration into the metal. But that is just a fine tuning issue. The welds are fine just as they are.

I have been trying learn to Tig Welding on thinner metal. Ugh!!! Try not to warp metal or burn through. It is more patience then it is practice.

Nice job Orange!

It's on the hottest setting right now. It's only a 140A welder. This welder does a pretty good job on the little stuff. Which is what I bought it for. The uppers will be more of a test since I will be lying down and welding vertical and overhead.

I have a couple words of advise......

Helmet

Welding blanket

Wet Towel very near by

Nothing like a fire hot slag bouncing down your shirt or onto head your while you are laying trapped under a car. Wet towel to the rescue!
