Header Evac Kit

Well, hopefully this will be the last tech install write up I do for a while. Maybe I will finally be racing the car instead of working on the car?!

Anyway, this is for drag racing only and will not work on a street car. This type of system is designed for open headers, but has been run with some success by others with a race style exhausts that have little to no restriction.

This kit is as old school as it gets, but when working properly should be very effective. The idea is to create a negative pressure in the crankcase by pulling out the blow-by. This creates a better ring seal and allows the crank to spin more freely instead of fighting all of the windage in the crankcase. These systems can free up as much as 50HP!

I'm going to run the Dynomax race bullet mufflers since they are a straight through design with basically no restriction. The kit is pretty simple. Put in the valve cover breathers, drill a couple holes in the exhaust for the check valves. weld check valves into exhaust at a 45* angle. Attach a hose from each breather to the check valves. Its done! No more oil being sucked into the intake by the pcv valve !!!!!!!!!

I will install a fitting in one valve cover and run it to a gauge in the car to monitor crankcase vacuum.

Well I had some time today to get started on the car again. Since the exhaust was in place and it will have to come out to fix the block plate I decided to do the header evac kit first. I started by getting under the car and marking the H-pipe where the check valve would be welded.

After I drilled my hole with a uni-bit I had to notch the hole in the direction that the check valve would be placed. It has to be welded at a 45* angle.

After tacking the check valve in place it was welded all the way around.

Next step was to cut the flow tubes off of the old American Thunders.

After the tubes were cut off, the new Dynomax race bullets were tacked on. I also had to cut the exhaust hangers off of the old mufflers. I put them in the exhaust hangers and went underneath the car and tacked them on as well.

I got one side finished and then I ran out of welding wire. I went out and bought some more wire and stopped by an exhaust shop and they made me some turn downs for $10. Tomorrow all of the welding will be complete.

I installed the valve cover breathers and ran the steel braided line on the passenger side. I will cut and fit the lines when I get a chance and then on to fixing my block plate so I can test out this system.

Well I will admit that when we first met I didn't even know how to install a shifter. That was over 10 years ago! I've learned a thing or 2 since then.
