First off all as far as I know nobody got hurt save the bad guy.
I was working on one of our systems at the San Yisdro Port of Entry minding my own business when the whole thing started.
Now Mother Duff having not raised a foolish child – coupled with having lived in Inglewood (near Hollywood Park) in the early 70’s as a child and serving in the Marine Corps - I know the sound of firearms and by the second report - I took cover behind a two foot thick concrete K-Rail.
Story so far is that SDPD perused a suspect to the boarder here in San Yisdro where he was going to try to evade by entering Mexico. Now normally CHP & PD or whoever is giving chase try’s to let the US Customs folks at the Port know of such happenings long before this - but someone forgot to drop a dime and caught everyone totally unaware. Normally they stop southbound traffic & set up a road block.
Anyway the guy made it into Mexico blasting away at the US officers giving chase. People where running every all over & everyone else (like me) was ducking for cover left & right. Totally amazing nobody got hurt.
But as fortune would have it - the gun battle gave the Mexican authorities (Police & Military) time to prepare & where waiting on the other side. That’s when the shooting really picked up. So much so that I totally lost count. Someone said something about the Mexican Marines shooting out the tires of the suspect’s vehicle and then shot the driver too when he shot at them. I’m thinking the guy should have surrendered on our side because by the accounts I’m getting the Mexicans just unloaded on the guy when he crossed.
BTW for those not in the know the Mexican Military (unlike ours) stationed at the border are “armed” (M16A2s) and in full combat body armor. If we did that the Mexican’s would have a cow!
There’s more but I’m waiting to find out more of what happened on the other side.
