Hope And Change: Obama Kills The Muscle Car.
05-19-09: This crap is really getting old. Today the Obama administration announced a “land mark” proposal to screw the auto industry even more than ever. His “historic proposal” would raise the corporate average fuel economy to 39 mpg for cars and 27 mpg for trucks, for an average across all sold vehicles in America to 35.5 mpg by 2016.
By 2016! This oversteps the previous legislation enacted in 2007 that would have raised the CAFÉ for cars to 35 mpg by 2020. Not only has the target been set higher, but the deadline moved up by four years. One has to wonder how the automakers are going to meet this goal given they have a 3-4 year lead time on new designs. This means they have to pretty much drop everything they are working on for their very survival and shift gears to serve Obama’s new deal.
The tragedy for automotive enthusiasts here is the pure mathematics of this new proposal virtually erases any possibility that we will be writing about 500hp V8 muscle cars in five years. It erases the likelihood that you will even see commonplace high-performance V8 Mustangs for instance a decade from now.
This new proposal will force automakers to make and sell cars that get 45, 55, and 65 mpg to allow cars that get only 25, 30, and 35 mpg to even exist. This, all to make sure that the average of all cars sold meet a 39 mpg average. Think about that for a minute. Think about the brand new 2010 V6 Mustang that gets in the mid 20 mpg range, the GT and the GT-500 that gets in the low teens. These cars aren’t going to be a priority in five years. No, all of the engineering and development money from here on out will be spent on the latest greatest death-can that can meet regulations.
The costs are going up too. MPG costs money, and even the Messiah claims the new proposal will raise the cost on average for all cars about $1800. Of course we all know that it will be more. In addition, the government will be giving even more of our billions of tax dollars to the automakers to help them meet these new rules. Yep, that’s right. We haven’t bailed out the bankrupt enough yet. Let’s kick them in the teeth some more and pay their medical bills afterwards. Sounds like hope and change we can believe in.
Bottom line is that if you love cars, muscle cars your era is over. Buy them while they are still available and keep them in your garage because they will be soon a high commodity. If they still exist in the future, they wont be cheap and they wont be plentiful.
This new proposal is being sold to us by Obama as a gravely needed change in our culture to save the planet. It is being billed as a proposal that all parties have come to the table and agreed on. "In the past, an agreement such as this would have been considered impossible," said President Obama. "That is why this announcement is so important, for it represents not only a change in policy in Washington, but the harbinger of a change in the way business is done in Washington."
The reality is that the automakers had no choice in the matter. Their hand was forced, particularly with GM and Chrysler who’s testicles are effectively in Obama’s hands. Since they came running to the government for a bailout, they are now owned by the Obama mindset. They will agree to this new world order or be fired by the Messiah. Ford and other automakers had little choice to go along with the new proposal as it does do one thing they need - provides a single nationwide standard.
For years California, the paragon of Greenist Socialism, along with a dozen or so other states has been threatening to create their own patchwork of stringent standards. Such a move would have created even more uncertainty for the Big 3, having to engineer for several different state rules. If they weren’t broke and out of business now, it would surely have done the job. While they may have dodged this bullet for the time being with this new agreement, the reality is that we are all in for changes we cannot even fathom.
Elections have consequences. This freight train is headed right at us with nobody to stop it. Even if every Republican in the House and Senate had the backbone to fight it, they don’t have the weight to do it. Thanks to an ignorant electorate we now have one party in charge, the most aggressive radical collection of environmentalists, socialists, and outright Marxists have complete and unstoppable control of our country.
To all those who voted for the new Greenist Socialist Hope and Change, this proud day in America is for you. Start shopping for your new 60mpg death-can while the rest of us bask in the loss of our freedoms.
