WEll as some of you know I'm stationed on 32nd street on the Tarawa, i currently am at 3 years 10 months and i have a 5 year contract. I just picked up DC2. My boat will be decoming in march. Right now my chain has made me availible for transfer in October. I will be choosing my orders on the 3rd of september so there is alot of stress riding on me right now because there is only 5 E-5 billets open in san diego (4 of them are the regan and nimiz...yeah).
So... i have about a year left and i cant seem to make up my mind about what i want to do. I cant reenlist because DC is overmanned so that is out of the question. I have been debating between going to work as a sherrif's deputy for san diego or going to SDSU. The new GI bill benifits really intreage me because they will pay for the school obviously, the give you a 1,000 dollars per year for school supplies and the biggest new addition to the GI bill is they give you BAH every month. My wife is pissed at me because i keep changing my mind about what I'm going to do. I also think becoming a cop might be good too because they pay you while you are in training and they start out at decent salary( about 57,000). I really want to buy a house this year but i think with me getting out of the navy i could be shooting myself in the foot if i dont get a job. who's knows there are so many options out there right now and i cant seem to get a fix on what might be best for the long run.
I really need some outside perspective on what i could do or what you guys might think.
Thanks
eric

The Border Patrol is hiring. I'm not saying this as a joke. I've been there 20 years.
It's a great job!

Maybee Crossrate?

Ive always been weighing my options on what to do when/if i get out. ANd the CHP is top on my list. The pay is nice, and they help you get your BS in criminal justice if you deicde to persue that career path. Peronsally i love having a job where there is some excitement. Hell, i took up a IA to gitmo, and im liking it down here.

But the CHP is nice. What degree would you pursue if you didnt join the chp/re-enlist?

Not sure which way is the best. Just keep weighing your options. Heres something that helped me. You may have heard this before but it really works. When I was at 8 years in I decided that it was now or never. I either made the Navy a career or separated . Well you can see what I chose. Reason being I had the opportunity to get a pretty stout SRB.
Anyway, getting to the point, Just sit down w/ you fav cold beverage and write down all the pros and cons of your options. In the end you may decide to go against the outcome you get from this, but at least you will have all of your thoughts organized and have a clear picture of what you are getting into either way.

On a side note: About buying a house. Your mortgage lender will want to see that you have been at the same job for I think at least 3 years or so. Keep that in mind if you intend to buy a home. You may have trouble getting financed if you change jobs.

Thanks for all of the replies. I feel that i want to reenlist for shore duty but i dont want to cross rate due to going back to school across country and being underway is really tough on my wife and i think the new GI bill benefits that are going to be availible next year are too good to pass up. I Want to work full time but i know i have more potentail then just a mediocer job, I researched the CHP and san diego sherrif's departments and i like the sherrif's deputy better because they dont make you go through boot camp and they pay the same. So what would you choose?

I dont think im lazy, I'm looking at what is best for my wife and me, CHP you do a 6 month bootcamp, you will be located to where the CHP needs you (anywhere in CA) and other the hand six month school for deputy, you cant be located outside of san diego county and it pays the same as a CHP officer. what would you choose if you were married?
