I remembered.

I woke up, getting ready for work and had turned the morning news on. Saw the first tower on fire and caught the reporter saying a plane had hit it. Didn't think too much of it, because from what I understood, it happened before, until seeing the second plane hitting the second tower live. I was shocked.
Shortly after, got a call from work and was told we are being called in and we are being mobilize for emergency and told to report with all my riot gear and weapons. What a day that was.

We were at a log cabin in WVa having our first wedding anniversary. No Tv, radio, we only heard it on the alarm/radio and went to the lodge and seen it. I called in to work and they said stay on leave. What a day that was.

I was going to either 5th grade, or 6th grade at school. I don't remember which one... I had no idea what was going on.

When 9/11 happened,

I was on the USS STENNIS (CVN-74), heading back to San Diego from work-ups since the first part of July. We were supposed to be pulling in on the 13th. It was now just over 2 months at sea doing work-ups. For those that aren't military, all units go though a training phase that is normally called work-ups so that the unit may be deployed to the area that they are needed. The STENNIS was doing work-ups for a cruise to the Arabian Gulf.

On Monday, the 10th, a friend , one that I had trained at the Pentagon and had followed me to the STENNIS, had e-mailed me saying that he was back at the pentagon and would start work on Tuesday the 11th. He had gotten out of the Navy and went back to DC, mainly cause his wife and family were from there.

As the horrible events from that day, September 11th unfolded, the STENNIS was ordered to a MODLOC (told to go to a new location) and park to await surge/alert aircraft. We took on about 10 aircraft, F/A-18's armed them with missile and bullets for their guns and sent them back up to start a DEF CAP over Los Angeles and San Diego.

Its one thing to see and know what was going on but to fly armed planes over our own cities was a humbling experience. I know that the Airforce does it all the time but for me this was the first time I have heard that Navy doing it.

The aftermath of that day lead to me and the rest of the STENNIS crew to only seeing our loved ones for 3 weeks before a 8 month deployment (in total it was a one year deployment). On 9/11 my friend was called by the office in the Pentagon that he could take the day off and get settled in before coming on Wednesday. The guy that called him was LCDR Tolbert and he perished in the attack on the Pentagon later that morning. LCDR Tolbert was a great guy to work, there will never be another as cool as him. My friend and his family are safe and sound.

I will never forget that day of having to call Myztry and tell her its going to be fine, even when I had no clue what would happen.

I was in 8th grade when the attacks happened.. I didn't know what happened until I got to school, since I was running late that morning, I didn't turn on the tv.

I got to school and a buddy of mine said "have you heard about the attacks?" And then I was pretty much unknowing of any details until the first class, where we watched the news the entire period, as we did, the entire day.

However, the morning isn't exactly what I remember.. the evening is..

For the first time, and only time in my life, I saw my dad and my grandfather cry.

My brother at that time was a lt. in the army, we knew very well what was going to come, however, we did not know if he would ever come back..

He has served 4 tours in Iraq, hes now blind in his right eye, has been since his 3rd tour.. And I'm pretty sure he'd love to go to Afghanistan.. details about that are unknown to this point though..

Well on that morning I was in bed with my wife and recieved a phone call from my mother in Illinois. She told us what happened and we turned on the tv. We saw the 2nd tower get hit live. We couldn't believe that was actually happening.

I was a Store Manager at Petco Animal supplies at the time and I remembered hanging an American flag inside the store from the cash wrap area. I could only stand opening up the store each morning for a few days before I decided to take action. I logged on to USMC.mil and volunteered to be activated off of IRR ( Individual Ready Reserve). Less than 2 weeks later I recieved orders in the mail. I figured my 4 years in the infantry shouldn't go to waste. I ended up in Stuttgart Germany as Sgt of the Guard for Marine Corps Forces Europe. (Panzer Kaserne). 24 on 24 off for the first 3 months.

My orders were for 11 months, but I was extended for another 13 months. I was going to extend for another year, but I started getting into trouble for beating up Turks and Germans, so opted to leave. During that 2 years I saw my wife maybe 5-6 times. Now we are closer than ever.

By the way 6th grade!!!!! Damn I'm getting old, lol

It probably wouldn't have happened if we had Hit them immediately after USS Cole got hit.. Thanks again Mr. Clinton!
WWII was preceded by Navy casualties too (no not Pearl Harbor). USS Reuben James was torpedoed by U-552 a year before we got hit at Pearl.. The public oppinion (same as in 2000) was " they are in the Navy, They take thier chances" it took a major hit (like 911) to wake up the country to the imminent threat. If we had swung into action following the Cole bombing we would have located the fight "Over There" instead of on our home turf.

FS, I would love to say that would have been the key but we can "What If" till the cows come home. when you have a determined enemy, anything is possible for any motive you can dream up
