"Drive One" is Ford's latest corporate brand advertising slogan and the Pro Stock team of Jim Cunningham and Erica Enders are taking that statement to a whole new level. Enders is playing the role of 'hired gun' while Cunningham owns the team and will drive the second Mustang. The two are the first to have received the new carbon fiber 2010 Mustang bodies as well as the new Ford Pro Stock block and cylinder heads. Larry Morgan received body #3 and his completed car can been seen here.
Cunningham is credited for essentially dragging Ford kicking and screaming back into NHRA Pro Stock. In the long run, Cunningham was unable to compete using Ford's 15 year old pro stock technology. Enter Brian Wolfe, new head of Ford Racing - Wolfe is a racer's racer and one of the original Pro 5.0 racers from "back in the day". Wolf saw a man with an allegiance to the Blue Oval who had the resources to field a competitive Pro Stock team and he took the opportunity and ran. Cunningham, who also is the owner of Capital Raceway, facilitated the creation of new Ford hemi (or Mirror Image) cylinder heads and also the new Pro Stock block by working out a deal with Wolfe to pay for the tooling of the pieces.
As the 2010 NHRA season approaches we'll undoubtedly see more and more of these beautiful Mustangs getting prepped for NHRA competition. Hopefully we'll get to see some of these new bodies in classes like the NMRA's Pro Outlaw 10.5, NMCA's Pro Street, and Super Street 10.5 W classes as well.
